I just recently dug out my old 80kg sandbag.

I used it while i was stuck in france nowhere near a gym and had to train. Carrying that around was great for getting the heart going and really working the whole body.

Also i recently started trying proper bridging. I'm very close to getting my nose to the floor.... very tiring though.

And finally... the one-handed dumbell snatch..... love doing these, although i do get some strange looks in the gym from the old bench/curl boys! hehe

Anyone else got any good exercised that they can recommend?.... i just love finding new ways to work my body.

80KG in a sandbag? what sort of sand bag was that? :D i am sure when we fill sand bags they hold 50kg ;)

one of the things i used to do to train with when i was sprint training years ago, also good for the legs too anyway, was to use my weight belt with a 1.5 metre length of chain attached to it, i would then attach the chain to a truck spare wheel and then attempt to get into a sprint start position, from there i would literally try to drag it round the ash track we had in the garrison :D

i also used to use the weight belt with a shorter chain for doing chin ups with a 25kg weight attached to it :)

lastly i used to use for benchpressing and other exercises, a beer keg of all things with about 50kg of sand dumped into it :D

Talking of chains, you could incorporate them into your barbell lifts. Certainly adds a nice kick.

Maybe bands for resistance..

Nah it's one of those green army kit bags with a heavy duty plastic bag inside 2 bags of 40kg sand and looooads of duct tape to hold it together.

lol :D i would use that as a punchbabag but i wouldnt want to lug it round with me :D

i imagine it has got some use to it though, just cant fathom how an 80KG kit bag can be comfortable to carry :)

punchbag: It's had to find a way of suspending it.... because it's so heavy.

comfort: that's the good thing about it, it's very hard to get up, so it is a really good test. Pressing it over your head is quite a challenge, i mean i can do it with a barbell easily, but the bag is a *****!

phatman, could you explain what a single dumbell snatch and bridging is?!

1h Sn: Dumbell between legs grip with left hand, right hand on right knee.... explode off floor and as body straightens out give a big shrug with left shoulder.... as bell comes past face, dip down slightly and whip elbow under and try to catch bell at highest point (arm should be nearly straight).... straighten up arm and body.
To lower... gently lower bell to shoulder, and then thigh and finally floor (try not to lose control of lowering, cos you might injure yourself)

I'm not going to personally advise doing this as all oly style lift can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

Bridge: see here. The hindu squats and pressups are great to if you can't get to the gym.

i have a picture round here somewhere of me doing a snatch with a full bar and one arm that had as i recall nearly 65Kg on it ;)

took me ages whilst out in Bosnia (although i had plenty of time on my hands :D ) trying to do it, i dont think i managed it until after being out there for 4 months :D

ahh thats called bridging then =) ive done them before, very very good to strengthen the neck muscles apparently
cheers mate

Very interesting article. Have you ever tried doing those things as a major part of your routine mate? I like the sound of the handstand pushups.

I use the hindu squats all the time, and i started practicing the bridge last week. Being as inflexible as me makes it tough.

not brilliant quality but then again nor was the camera or the photographer :D

heres a few I used to do

chain 2 x 5.5kg weights and tie chain to a rope attach rope around head and secure lie flat on a bench or bed allow weights to dangle over end with head

then proceed to do head lifts
by this I mean lowering your head as if your tilting your head fully back then lift it and touch chin to chest

gives you wicked neck muscles if done properly and in moderation

another is to get a partner and a few crash mats

pick your partner up over your head (if it takes a while dont worry your working muscles you dont normally use) as many times as your body allows
