Morrowind 2011

Man, i had to restart skyrim because i forgot to backup my save file. I've just started torchlight and the witcher 2. Looks like this'll be getting added to the started pile. I'll buy this tonight...possible Oblivion next week Haha

I still think Morrowind > Oblivion tbh.

real time shadows seems to be the fps hog in the overhaul, any way to tweak them?

I feel the same way, I've always preferred Morrowind quite a lot more to Oblivion.

Re : shadows, in 'Morrowind Graphics Extender XE 0.9' I assume you mean the bit where it says (In-Game tab) 'high detail actor shadows [buggy]'? - This is the only setting I can't really afford to enable; it may be due to it being buggy as stated, though I expect it's really more to do with it being too much of a system resource hog for my pc.

One other thing that is maybe worth trying...under 'MGSO Options', click on the 'Misc' tab and there you can try and see what effect selecting 'Realistic Dark' vs 'Realistic Brighter' has on your fps. I'm not certain, but I think the dark option gives performance a subtle edge, and if anything I prefer it a little more anyway. Worth a shot. :)

Have you tried overclocking your gpu?

I don't have the high detail shadows on - I have everything else pretty much at max. Does SSAO make much difference to FPS because I'm not sure I really like it anyway. Might disable that.

BTW the water caustics look flippin' amazing! As a poster above said, I'm looking around Seyda Neen and everything looks as I remember it, it's those rose-tinted memories at work! :p

I've started a Breton Long-Blade, Light Armour character with specialisation in Alteration and Conjuration. Can't wait to get some playtime in! :D

I've already OC'd my GPU a little but will fit the spot cooling fan I have this weekend and stick it by the GPU and notch it up a bit. :)

I should think that will help quite a bit if you disable it; you might as well if you have doubts about it. I haven't experimented with turning specific settings off in the shader set-up, I just decided to use them all before starting out. It will be interesting to see what effects there are when something(s) are disabled, and I might even prefer the 'new look'. You never know, I might then be able to apply the buggy shadows! :D

In fact, I'd say Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion.

I wish Skyrim had reinstated the Left/Right bits of kit in all honesty.

Oblivion started to dumb things down somewhat.

Also, I'm running at 1920x1200 and the DarkUI is nice but a bit small, any mods to increase sizes?

EDIT: Also, I'm finding that the lack of voice acting for NPCs doesn't bother me one bit - even in Skyrim I tend to read the subtitles and get bored waiting for the voice acting to finish.

I'd prefer it in these sort of games when you walk past someone, that they don't automatically speak to you.

Agreed... talking to each other, fine, but telling a stranger their life story each time you come within 5 yeards of them is annoying. Casual stuff like wishing you good morning is fine though.

A few times in Skyrim, I've been tempted to kill Adrianne Avenicci because she tells me how she helps her father in more ways than I can imagine... Hmm, incest?

The other thing I would like to see is the game clock match our own, not one minute of our time equating to fifteen minutes or whatever in the game world. I know this may unbalance things in some respects such as time related quests, but if this could slowly filter through I would be pleased. Other games would be even better for it imo, such as Stalker.

Some smashing shots there, PianoBasher. :) What settings did you decide on in the end?

In the end I did try a combination of shader settings. I'll post my thoughts later when I've a bit more time.

I didn't bother with the extra trees in Balmora, that looked silly IMO. I picked all the others though (and the lore friendly option one). I'll grab a screenshot later of my settings. Grass option is "colourful" but I don't seem to have as much grass as in some other people's screenshots - perhaps I deselected "lush grass" or some such thinking about it, because I know in Oblivion the grass makes finding lootable bodies etc a nightmare to find.

I've got the shaders that max settings comes with still, I haven't disabled SSAO yet, but it's driving me mad because it makes me feel like I've had too much to drink - it doesn't appear to be that well implemented as I'll be staring at a body in the distance and it just won't focus.

So, yes, I'll disable SSAO and that should sort the FPS out. It's perfectly playable as it is, doesn't appear to drop below about 35fps but I think that reducing "draw distance" to about 9 or 10 cells from 11 may help as well, I'll report back.

By the way, DON'T pick the "naked" option on the better bodies. I did this thinking it'd be good for realism and had a bit of a shock when I looted the tax collector bloke's body in Seyda Neen.

Are you using rev186/rev178, because I don't see the real time landscape/tree/building shadows. Also, I had an issue once with none of the grass showing when I used one of those revisions of MGE.

I might drop down, because I think the dynamic shadows (from MGE XE) are a real slow down for me. Not sure.

Can't remember what I was running last night, but I'm sure I have the shadows enabled (see bottom of screenshot 3, you can see some shadows there), I probably just wasn't in a place where they showed that well. I know that if I run without the real time shadows, my FPS flies up massively. :)

I think the shadows would be better if you could tweak them to calculate once per game hour or something. Turning them off really detracts from the game once you're used to having them on IMO - it just adds a lot more depth.

The realistic lighting is something I didn't lilke at first, but now I'm getting used to it, and it's actually far more realistic so I'll stick with it. :)

Getting used to the combat again is the only thing that I'm finding tricky - if only there was a skyrim combat mod it'd be perfect. :)

Initially I unselected all the shaders and turned off AA just to see what it looked like, and also to see what sort of increase of fps I'd get. It certainly looked somewhat lacklustre, and indoors I was getting up to 200 fps. :D

I then slowly worked my way back up, starting with the obvious ones like underwater effects. My main intentions were to add the 'buggy' shadows and see at what point a shader caused a slow down in frame rate, as well as also to find out simply what change there was when one was added or removed. It seemed that selecting the buggy shadows was fine, provided I left out one of the more demanding shaders, like HDR.

Perhaps my ageing cpu (Q6600 @ 3.4) is holding my gpu (gtx480 SOC) a little too much for this last setting. It's either that or my cpu is simply a little too slow for some number crunching. Having said all that, I'm not sure I would have actually used it anyway. True to its name, they do indeed appear buggy. Lots of black lines appeared either from npc's feet, where the shadow would be. Where it works ok, it looks great, but I did notice more than one bug in just the few minutes I tried it out.

One other thing, I've found the in game AA settings doesn't really seem to make a great deal of difference between off - x8. Trying to force it through the Nvidia cp doesn't work, and as I mentioned in an older post, with an old title like this it's tricky to know what values to change in something like Nvidia Inspector, which I'll add, has been useful for getting AA to work 'properly' in more recent titles like Dead Space 2.

Open console- set timescale to 1

And it almost always messes up quests(and not ones you might expect):)
