Mortal Kombat

I liked the original but was just a kid when I watched it so just nostalgia.

I remember buying the original on VHS for my birthday when I was 11 or so, absolutely loved every minute of it.

I've not watched it in years though, probably best to leave it in the past and not mar the good memories.

It was alright, I'd probably say 6/10 was a fair assessment... for me it didn't live up to the hype but it was still miles better than the 1995 film (minus the music).

Things they should have changed:
  1. Called it mortal kombat but chose to have all battles outside the rules of the tournament. They said the elder gods didn't care... which is surely the point of the tournament or Outworld could just invade for the lulz?
  2. The actor that played Raiden - Never really came across as a God.
  3. Raiden's light-me-up eyes were a terrible choice. Either have an all white effect or nothing at all.
  4. Generic new guy was related to Scorpion and his power was... some special armour and bladed weapons. Missed opportunity. Why not have him discover some magic ritual and bring back scorpion with the use of his blood? Cut his hand on the spear/trowel and have it drip on to something... I dont know.
  5. In fact, get rid of the generic new guy character and instead have Johnny Cage from the start. Does anyone familiar with the IP event want a random new guy?
  6. Kano - great scene with the discovery of his power but then it went under-used again.
  7. Goro could have been cut. Even his grand entrance was blown... they showed a shadow walking in and Shang Tsung announced his name before you saw him but they should have just shown the shadow and left you wait a bit for the reveal. At least in the 1995 film they showed how brutal he was by killing randoms... in this he gets creamed in his first battle despite the big bad saying how glad he was to have his blood part of their team. Okay?
  8. Reptile lizard creature thing. Just no.
  9. Showed some more back story of Kano and Kabal.. having their first meeting one that introduced him AND set up a double cross felt too rushed.
  10. Jax... didn't care for the character because we saw him for 5 mins before he lost his arms then ended up getting big arms within the scene.

Also...

They intentionally kept referring to Sub Zero as Bi-han to set up the sequel. Taking his armour off was an obvious nod to Noob Saibot (that he becomes after dying, in the game). The fact that his brother takes up the Sub Zero mantle in the second game tells me they'll bring back Bihan as Noob in the sequel.

1.Think it's not bad the tournament has not even started so it was just fighting to get rid of the other team.
2. I think they should replace him he was just bland they could have done a better job with a statue.
3. I thought it was ok, but your right they could have done better.
4. I think the issue is the guy playing him. also as the main lead, I don't think he ever won other than beating Goro.
5. it was a good idea to bring someone new but they made too many mistakes
6. I thought kano and scorpion was the best part of the movie
7. I thought Goro was a little wasted, I thought they could have built him up and used him more or mention him but leave him out.
8. it was a choice what else could they have done other then making him a ninja with his face covered.
9. Yes but they dont have the time to cover everything.
10. I thought he was good well better then some of them.[/spoiler

There's a good chance that anyone killed in this movie (on the outworld side) could reappear in the second movie.

Some of their bodies are shown turning black and disintegrating so might be getting brought back in some way, no real other reason to show that.

It was better than the previous films but that's not really saying much lol
I thought Kano was quite funny at times, but wasn't really a fan of the new guy as he seemed weak, getting beat by everyone apart from Goro.

Surprised anyone thinks this is better than the original. Apart from the special effects I thought the original was much better.

A few days since i've watched it now and can't see myself every watching it again. The youtube series a few years back was far better, Mortal Kombat: Legacy

I agree with this. Lets be honest the first one is cheesy and dated but also has a lot of charm and enjoyable acting performances. Even the themesong is fantastic in it's own way.

It's memorable and was pretty original for the martial arts tournament style movie at the time.

The new one has some great mortal kombat moments with fatalitys etc but I wanted more. If they had just made it about the actual tournament or more around subzero/ scorpion rivalry with a bunch of fights It would probably have been better.

A rehash of the original with better effects, fighting choreography and an extended roster of fighters would have gone down a treat with me. Obviously the plot should change a bit but the cliche fighting comp is okay. It's what the series is.

Well that was pretty bad. Sure the fights were pretty enjoyable but cheesy as it was, the old one drew me in a lot better with charm. I can't get my head around their use of a new character in a franchise that has literally 200 characters to play with we got an original character whose power in literal plot armour when established franchise characters get arcs that start and end with "I'm Kung Lao, I have a hat".

A movie based around the Sub Zero and Scorpion feud? I'd be all over that, it's the best 11 minutes of the film and they gave 7 of them away for free. A movie based on the last few games since they seem to have single player modes written by frustrated screen writers anyway? Sure. But what we got? meh.

Watched on Sat night, was ok but nothing great and all the action was basically during their training not in an arena/tournament so rushed IMO.

The 1995 movie though cheesy was far better IMO.

Cheers. I grew up playing the game in the arcades and Kano was always my favourite alongside Goro who I always enjoyed seeing in action but couldn’t play as sadly.

Think I’ll pass on this one and just keep the last two films (with C.Lambert as Raiden) in my fond memory as cheesy as they were!

I finally managed to watch this and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it's any better or any worse than the original. I preferred Robin Shou as Lui Kang, and I think Lui Kang Vs Reptile was amazing in the 95 movie. But I thoroughly enjoyed this one too, Sub Zero and Scorpion stole the show as usual, and I wish there was more of both. Loved seeing some fatalities too. Needed more Shang Tsung, a different Raiden and less Cole.

It's ok, as a generic action/beat em up movie, but it's not amazing. Felt like a lot of lost opportunities.

6/10 - non die hard MK fan.

I actually really enjoyed it. I think when I saw the trailer I wasn't expecting much but I came out the other end satisfied and a smile on my face.

The pacing was off and there were a few bits that seemed really rushed but overall it was good fun and I'd watch it again.

I'd go with 6/10 too. But I do hope a sequel gets the green light. There was some good stuff here (Scorpion vs Sub Zero, Kano, Kung Lao) and a lot has clearly been held back for second and third films.

I'd also watch a longer "directors cut" if they released one. A few extra scenes, taking the movie up to 2:30 could easily turn this in to a 7/10 or 8/10 film. Some parts were too rushed, and some characters didn't get anything like enough development.

Let’s just compare it to MK2: Annihilation, and then we can all be happy...:D

Sonya’s massive exposition dump made me chuckle - writers couldn’t even be bothered doing it as part of the storyline, just had her having done all the research offscreen and then just launches it at Cole in one big sentence... maybe I’ve watched too many CinemaSins, Honest Trailers and Pitch Meetings to not be a film critic...
