Bleach, wash off + kill spores. Takes a good while for them to settle again, esp. if you keep up the maintenance. Zinc strips are not only expensive and generally more environmentally toxic, but become useless after 6 months to a year and need to be replaced.
Doesn`t even need bleach if you give it a soap and water scrub properly every so often...
you are talking a tiny bit of zinc here, not sheets of the stuff. As for toxic, its not like you are drinking from the gutter. Plenty of roofs are made of zinc.
