Most 'generic' fps?

Another vote for the UT's here. UT99, starting off against bots, and the game will ramp up the difficulty as you get better, it's a great way to learn the ropes.

It also depends on what you want to do, if you want to improve your reactions, insta-gib games will really help for example.

I played UT2004 instagib against godlike bots for an hour as warmup before TF2 official matches which was great for getting your twitch aim and movement warmed up. Aim is only 50% of online play though, the rest is based on gamesense and using your head to outsmart other players. Slow down your play and start thinking a bit more and trying to anticipate where people will be, what weapons they're using, what routes they take etc.

As impresive as flick headshots from 8 miles away are, I always feel so much more satisfaction from really outsmarting someone.

Crysis - move forward, shoot guy in face, move forward, pick-up rpg, move forward, blast the helicopter, move forward, punch enemy in the face, move forward, shoot the turtles, move forward, sigh......

As a an old school die hard I'd say 1.6 - practise 2/3 bullet head flicks with the AK. Master these and you will never have any problems with aim.

However aim is only one part of being a good player. You need reactions and 'game sense' too.

COD is alright in terms of reactions and 'game sense' Most of the guns are too easy so try and use more specialised guns like semi automatics rather than the generic AK74u or famas.

Practice.

Simple really, no FPS is going to be 'pickup and own' when you are new to a community as there are always players out there that have played for longer in either that game or as a FPS player overall. Dont worry about scores until you actually find yourself winning your 1v1s... once that happens you want to be looking at positives on the K/D board... then looking at how you can win 1v2s.

Other things to bear in mind are map knowledge... absolutely essential. Going back to a good old classic in MOHAA and TDM. In a public once you got used to the map you knew where snipers would 'camp' and you would also be able to nade spawn points and have a 'route' to follow. By that I mean you can chase the spawn around the map and thus always be in position to hit the enemy either before they are ready or in a situation that you can be comfortable in.

I remember back on COD1, TDM on Pavlov iirc no frag limit and using the PPSH I racked up 250 kills for like 60 deaths. Reason? I chased the spawn and often got into the spawn and was able to rape people the minute they spawned :D Publics dont often require skill (skills are for matches as thats were real tests are) but knowledge of the map and game are key if you want to be a public hero.

Best way is just to dive right in. Just join a rush server on BFBC2, join a squad and follow your squad dropping med kits or ammo boxes. You will pick it up soon enough, I did the same when I started on BF2 it was my first PC fps I played online.

Hi guys. update on the thread. I've been playing quake live and I've gotten pretty good. But one thing- I die too much. I just played a game and won it (wooo) but as well as having the most kills, I also had the most deaths :(

Anyway that I can solve this problem?

Dont go near urban terror. That game is harsh.

Quakelive is probably the 'purest' fps. Its aim and movement and weapon selection. With good movement you can get away with worse aim, with a better weapon you can get away with worse movement etc. Combine that best weapon with the right position and deadly aim and its beautiful.

Dodge more bullets :p

Can't say what you're doing wrong since I haven't seen you play but I know my greatest failing is that I tend to slow down or stop when I'm shooting at someone, makes me a bit of a sitting duck and is also why I'm fairly average as scout in TF2 but quite good as a heavy.

Improve your movement.
This means literally dodging enemy fire. Dodging where you think the enemy will fire.
Finding most efficient routes to patrol the map
Find and use armor etc run the armor it appears 25 secs from pickup this will allow you to take more damage

my advice, get cod 1 or 2.

When you are fighting with a bolt action rifle that only holds 5 bullets at a time you really learn how to aim properly and learn tactics.

One of the best things I do in a game, go the opposite way to everyone else. You often find yourself behind the enemy as they concentrate on the bulk attack :)

I found playing UT99 and Quake 3 with uber bots helps me to aim a lot better and move quicker, then playing CS helps with positioning and control of the weapon. Going back to older more fast paced games really helped me when I sucked at CS, it was then just a case of learning the maps and observing how other people played.

The main thing is to always try and play against people at a greater skill level than you, beating down on weaker players can be fun but sooner or later someone will show up and put you in your place, you won't learn from it, you'll just get frustrated.

CS Source is quite a hard game to go back to if you have been playing more modern shooters, other than the AWP you will be constantly looking to change the view from hip fire.

really how hard can it be to camp certain pxels on the screen?

devs these days shouldnt be devs to be honest. the ****ers who want the easy money moved in and here is where we are at.

Yeah only way to get good is practise, atleast 5 hours a night for a few months... and then you need to keep playing to stay at the top of your game - I could jump back into quakelive now and do fairly well - but I'd get raped by the top50 players - back when I used to play I'd have a chance of winning against top ~16.
