Most over-rated film thread!

I think these threads are pointless, if you do not agree with critics and all time ratings movies then fine, but you can then say they where over rated because you thought they where pap.

example. matrix, groundbreaking in everyway and and amazing story,

saving private ryan, amazing effects good story and fantastic acting and portayal of war.

lost in translation, touching emotional story of friendship in a place where you thought none would be found, the bond between the two characters without going into love. moving in everyway.

but as you said its all personal so we cant realy do these sorts of threads.

Agree on alll points above. There's a fellow at work who dislikes many of the most seminal films in history, and thinks SW Eps 1 & 2 were "quality".

I doubt the opinions of anyone who thinks The Godfather or The Matrix are "crap", personal tastes notwithstanding. We could debate on the old "but if someone thinks they're bad then who's to say it isn't" routine all we like but the fact is that they are both amazing films, genre-busters if you will. Both will stay classics for years to come.

The Big Lebowski. Good, but not as great as some people make it out to be. I also fell asleep when I tried to watch Blade Runner :p. I won't comment on it though seeing as I missed a lot of it.

All of the Lord of the Rings films, utter utter borefest. I don't think I've managed to watch any of them in their entirety without falling asleep.

The irony.

Saving Private Ryan, shocking american tripe of the highest order.

You cant be serious? Yes the story may not have been great. It took war films to a new dimension. Actually portrayed war for what it was and not some gun-ho glamour fest.

Seems some folk are voting their worst film rather than the most-overated.

I thought Silence of the Lambs wasn't worth the hype. I fell asleep watching th e Blair Witch Project. This was just hype and nothing else!

Blair Witch Project. Finally got round to watching it, after being told repeatedly how good/scary it was, and was hugely disappointed.

I think that would be the most over rated film I have ever seen, I didn't find it scary, and it didn't interest me. On that note, I would say Ringu for the same reasons.

Agree on the Tarantino stuff, he's the most over rated guy in film, in my opinion.
I thought Lost In Translation was incredible, yet I can understand the view point of someone who doesn't like it as much, it probably takes an acquired taste (similar to Garden State.)
I also agree on the Lord Of The Rings, I can't see why everyone likes it ? (I suppose a lot of more casual film watchers like this film) I thought it was really bad  oh well!

DOOM

OK, not a "top 100" or whatever,
but I waited years for them to make the darn thing,
and it's just an hour of looking at the Rock scowling...

What a waste of potential,
not even a flying tomato.

and what was the monster count ? 10, 20 ?
the n00b had it set on easy....

Alien was dark, yet you could see what was going on,
There were bits of Doom in which I didn't have a clue what was happening,
(some dark thing attacked a bloke in dark clothes, in the dark, scream - oh look, red blood, he must be dead then....ffs!)

for some reason this got good reviews?
.

Kind of what I was thinking. I quite liked Apocalypse Now however no way is it the best war film. Born On The Fourth Of July - moderately watchable but nowhere near in deserving all the hype it received.

Clerks - Inane drivel, tried to watch it twice, fell asleep the 1st time and nearly went the second. Pretty much everyone I have talked to about it raves about how good it is

The Shawshank Redemption. I like the film, but I just can't grasp what it is that warrants its consistent 'all-time greatest' rating.

I completely agree.

For me, you can include The Green Mile in with TSR. Vastly over-rated.

Apocalypse Now is also a vastly over-rated movie. People have got far too excited about it's cinematography rather than the plot.

OMG!! Open your eyes and smell the Napalm. Best ever made, no exception.

Dont even go there.

Nobody rated crap like T3 in the first place so how can it possibly be "over" rated.
Everyone thinks its rubbish.

As a general rule, 90 of the films in any top 100 are overrated and rubbish.

It just annoys me that many films, like scarface, godfather, pulp fiction, ect; arent actually 'amazing' films, but most people feel inclined to like them regardless, as it seems to be socially accepted that they must.

My picks:
Godfather.
Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. (i saw it after Snatch though, so that might be why).
Reservior Dogs.
Big Lebowski.
Fargo.
Goodfellas.
Dodgeball. Or any film with 'him' in it.
Carlitos Way.

And loads more that i cant think of at the moment. :p
