Anchorman - Some people treat this as the funniest movie of all time, it's ok and has some funny parts but that's it

Dumb and Dumber - Even less funny then Anchorman and even more overrated! And i love Jim Carrey too!

Citizen Kane - Tried to watch it 5 times and every time i either fall alseep or give up after 20mins, it's just so incredabily dull and unengaging

Shawshank Redemption - Just so overrated, it's a well made film and is worth a watch but it's not in the top 20 for me

I like how you're suddenly a troll if you don't think some films are great! :\

What ever happened to people being allowed to have opinions?

Go go gadget subjectivity. It's pointless to discuss this, as thinking something is overrated stems from the same subjectivity that determines how much you like or dislike a film.

What's wrong with discussing it?

Isn't that what the whole idea of the forum is about?

Why is it OK to like different types of music, other than pop music, but if you dislike popular films then you're suddenly a troll?

I don't know if that 20 minutes was just for example, but I would suggest you watch it a little longer. The film is quite weird at first with the back story and what-not but it does get a lot better. I turned it off after the first 10 minutes the first time, but then decided that I couldn't call it overrated or dislike it if I haven't actually seen it.

I'd like to go against the grain here and offer a film that is under-rated: Rocky V.

This is like one massive gigantic honey trap for trolls ... :D

so here you go, let's finish this quickly

But when you look at some of those top films, it isn't necessarily that they were popular in the same way as some of the older films bumped lower down the list were. Could it not be (in part) put down to the huge marketing budgets spent on these newer films?

I mean if marketing didn't work and they didn't get good takings they wouldn't spend as much as they do, would they?

This thread is going to be a mess, people will always buck the trend.

Avatar - yes it's not a ground breaking story, screenplay or direction. But that's not the point, the technology created to bring this to the screen is what was so impressive, a massive jump in film making. that's why it's a staple in modern cinema, just like;

Titanic - This was UTTER TOSH, they took a disaster and romanticised it so much so that some of the modern generation think the actual disaster was fiction... Impressive creation, but by god this film sucked ***** as a story, screenplay or in the acting department. But hell the technology created and used was a big step in film, so has to be respected for that alone. Plus you got big 'date points' if you took a girl to see this!

Lord of the Rings - you may not like the story, but you have to respect, the detail that Peter Jackson brought to a very big adaptation. Nobody will match this as far as books to films go, at 11 Hours, 22 minutes long, the amount of material produced at such a high standard, is just insurmountable in my opinion.

Titanic. I struggled because I just didn't see the point? Does this count as me not liking it? No idea.

Saving Private Ryan (apart from the first ten minutes - after that, just watch "A Bridge Too Far").

How can you under-rate something that bad?

It's easily a 6. The film is above average, it has Stallone in it and street fighting and Rocky wins, that makes the film above average, in the original Rocky didn't even win and it is rated really well.
