astounding  the levels are pretty insane - no wonder we get less PC games and more console games. I have to admit I am surprised that CoD MW2 with it's steam requirement is so pirated, i always thought that steam would be more secure, I guess I was mistaken

PC games via BitTorrent in 2009 :
360 games via BitTorrent in 2009 :
Wii games via BitTorrent in 2009 :

It's a shame it really is and I'm really supprised that after years and years of pirating we still having got anything even remotely more secure.

Those numbers are way smaller than I thought, I think it only shows a small bit of piracy...
Ah yes, it's only torrent downloads ( not all of them, how can they possibly see what happens on private sites?).

I do not believe it tbh. Downloads != playable game.

i always thought that steam would be more secure,

Steam or no steam, these games are cracked in no time.

tbh they're all ****.
The games ?
Your opinion...

CoD MW2 sp was good, SF IV is superb imo. Finally a good 2d fighter with nice graphics and which works well online.

Anyways, those numbers are WAY smaller than I thought.

I bet lot of people pirated it because of it's stupid high £35 to £40 price tag for a PC game..

(I was lucky and payed £30 for it in my local PC game store :))

Couldn't agree more. All the terrible and overhyped games are there. When it comes down to it, money usually goes where it is deserved.

With that said, I've bought a lot of games this year. And I think I wanna buy a few more :D

that is your PoV although most would disagree since they are quite popular games. unless you have been living on another planet many good studios have been forced to shut down over the last several years, we get very few exclusive PC games etc...

if that dosen't worry you, so be it. then enjoy your console because reality is that economically many studios cannot make ends meet. Even big companies liek EA had to lay off over 1000 employees recently, because even if they sell tons of FiFa etc... they still need to recoup on other initiatives which didnt do as well as planned.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (4.100.000)

This size of this number has nothing to do with the fact that Infinity Ward took a dump all over the loyal player base that initially supported them. Nope, not at all.

When will the industry realize that they can make more sales and so more profit if the price is cheaper with primarily digital download! I wont spend £35-40 on COD:MW2, however Left4dead2 was released at around £20 on Steam and i bought. If i was to consider playing COD:MW2 right now it would be a pirated copy!

Further more it seems to me that it generally cost more to get a game through a digital download provider than it does to actually have a physical copy inc. manual, dvd and box cover?!?! Is this the industry trying to prolong the life of games released on pressed dvd??

Not surprising really.

One thing I will say though are these numbers cannot be automatically equated to lost sales for the games themselves. How many people pirate to try out a game that they wouldn't have bought anyway? How many people pirate because they actually can't afford the game.

I know with college leaving me with about 50 euro spending money a month after food, rent and buses I've been guilty of the second case once or twice this year. I don't feel bad however as there is no way I could have bought the games so they aren't losing money. Any game I really wanted I just waited for a b'day or christmas and asked parents/gf to get it for me.

This doesn't represent lost sales though.

How many of those are people who if the pirated version wasn't available, still wouldn't buy the game?

My brother is a good example of this, skint student, he'll download the odd game, but wouldn't spend his money on one no matter what.

*edit* lol, see above!

What can't be ignored is that 4 of the top 5 PC games pirated don't have a demo (correct me if I'm wrong), and so many people turn to downloading the full game to try it, though I imagine a lot have no intention of buying it.

Illegal torrents seem to be being clamped down on nowadays thankfully, and people should realise it only makes the full games more expensive and less PC releases emerge.

There was a time when I may have thought about pirating the most expensive PC games, such as COD4 or MW, but that's only because they charge silly money for them new. As a PC gamer I'm used to spending quite a bit less (I know consoles are different). However, the expensive games are almost always over-hyped rubbish anyway now. Best game I've played in the last few years is probably Fallout 3, which has been priced very sensibly on all platforms imo, and probably benefited from it.

when will you realize your actions have consequences! can't believe how naive you can be. If you don't want to buy CoD that is your prerogative and right, no one is forcing you to. however this doesn't give you the self appointed right to pirate, just don't play it if you think it is bad game.
