MOT fail thread

Appreciate any advice you folks could provide. Dont want the Mazda to fail its MOT just on that. TIA. :)

They should defrost from engine heat when driving there, but if not pour hot water over them.
All but one of the tests I’ve done today have had frozen washer jets, but they’ve defrosted by the time I’ve finished.
 
Our old Fiesta that was going to be scrapped and was given to us free, I sent into the MOT completely blind just to see what we were dealing with. Only failed on front brakes. It's only a little potter about spare car so wanted to repair on the cheap. I know these parts are Eicher but on a 2004 Fiesta I don't really care. Cheapest brake change I've ever done.

MOT was passed with no advisories. Cheers! :)
I used de-icer on the jets plus hot water to pour on the pipes leading to the jets which helped. It snowed early morning to make my life more interesting.

The alcohol content can evaporate out at the nozzles, so you could have neat screenwash in, and still have no washers.
 
Heated water jets for the win. I struggled to start with this morning until melted and EV so no residual heat. De icer won’t work sprayed on as it won’t get into the nozzle/hose.

Does make you think, queues of traffic in this weather all kicking out heat does make a difference to how quick the road surface melts and dries out.
 
More fun..

There was an opened head light packet on the passenger seat, so I assumed the customer had fitted a new bulb, which he had, but when I say fitted I mean he'd plugged it in and just shoved it into the headlight without actually clipping it in.
There was unsurprisingly a smell of burning plastic as the bulb gently fused itself to the inside of the head light..



So that was a good start, next up was the NSF tyre which was below the legal limit and was also a different size to the other tyres..



But, the best was yet to come.
The customer mentioned that the rear brakes may need some attention, and to be fair, he wasn't wrong.
Both pads were worn down to the metal, and had been for quite some time.
The disc was about the same thickness as a 50p piece, whereas it should be around 10mm..



How that disc hadn't cracked or had just fallen to pieces is anyone's guess.
Still, and on the plus side, that's one less Peugeot 308 on the road, which is no bad thing.

Not a fail but the delights of especially owning an older Navara (and pickup which goes get used off-road in general):

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Nearside Front Shock absorbers has slight external damage to the casing corroded. (5.3.2 (b))
  • Offside Front Shock absorbers has slight external damage to the casing corroded. (5.3.2 (b))
  • Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced front to rear. (6.1.1 (c) (i))
  • Offside Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced front to rear. (6.1.1 (c) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Nearside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Nearside Rear leaf spring corroded.
  • Offside Rear leaf spring corroded.

At this point I'm not really using it on the road though and don't intend to at all going forward - will be getting something else for that role.

The irony was everyone who'd been in it at the dealer commented on how it was the cleanest Navara (interior) they've ever been in including new ones! sadly not the case for the exterior. Sadly it is still almost like new inside despite the state of the exterior.

That could literally be any car/truck of a certain age, and there’s absolutely no reason at all to take it off the road.
Buying a new vehicle because of surface corrosion is insane and a total waste of money.
All older Navaras, L200’s, Rangers etc are like that.
Why people (in general) panic about a bit of rust is crazy.

There is more than that to why I'm relegating it to off-road use - it seems to be one problem after another lately - i.e. just solved one oil temperature sensor problem and now the viscous fan clutch seems to have become stuck in the engaged position.

But corrosion wise the D40 Navara has specific corrosion issues - if it was most other makes/models I'd be far less concerned.

While there doesn't appear to be any structural issues when it gets to this point of corrosion with the D40 it is anyone's guess with the known chassis stress issues if it will snap or start cracking, so I'd rather just play it safe when I'm in the position to.
 
Not MOT related, but the results of dropping the oil on a DS3 wet belt engine..



It wouldn't have been long before the oil strainer was blocked with what was left of the belt and the engine went boom.
It's booked in next week for a replacement belt.
