Moterway speed limits.

Well I don't know if this topic was meant to be about a higher speed limit but that seems to be the jist now.

Anyway, I think it would be interesting watching cars going along at 100mph when there is a wind blowing. Also if the limit was 100mph it would make it impossible at times to pull onto the motorway since lorries would not be able to move over since a 40 mph speed limit gap, unless the lorry limit was changed too. Then unless your car could go from 0-70 very quickly you would be struggling.

I think what would happen is akin to what happens with many truckers now.

They either indicate & just pull out anyway, or, don't even bother to indicate in the first place.

Trucks are limited to 56MPH, assuming everybody did exactly the (if there was one) 100MPH limit, trucks would be mixing with cars doing at least 44MPH more than them!

A recipie for disaster imo, believe me, you don't want 44 tonners doing much more than 60MPH!

Oh no! How do you truckers cope with pulling out onto NSL roads then with cars doing up to 60mph more than them?

Higher limits on certain motorways should have been brought in a years ago. However, fuel consumption at those higher speeds increases dramatically, might not be in everyones interest to sit at high speeds unless they can afford it (and with out fuel costs its likely not everyone can).

Its part of the reason that the autobahns are loosing most of the unrestricted sections, Green Party power in modern day Germany rules unfortunately.

Why are all the Germans not dead?

That's good, we can leave Motorways for people with proper cars ;)

Due to higher driving standards and a much stricter driving test system (not the outdated "dont touch the kerb on 3 point turn" stuff we have here).

Think your Mondeo would be relegated to the inside lane if limits like that were brought in ;).

My car is 94, I hardly call the old tbh.

I have a Fiesta now not the 205 btw :p

I have confidence, but there are so many **** out there that cannot drive and I really don't think it'll be safe.

Like Westy said, we should be like France and have a different speed limit depending on the conditions.

A car made in 1994 *is* old, does it even have ABS? A Fiesta is hardly a big car either. I hired a 2005 1.4 Polo, and motorway driving that from London to Portsmouth wasn't fun at all - I had very little confidence in the car at speed, and in a word, was scary. The same journey in even a Golf Mk5 the next day was completely different, the car was a lot more sure-footed and was simply relaxing at speed.

I also drove the Golf to the south of France - French motorways are fantastic, and you can quite easily cruise for hours on end at 100.

The 10%~ rule applys to speed cameras.

Over 33 in a 30 = flash

over 77 in 70 = flash

etc.

Where did you make that one up from?

The only 10% thing around is the Association of Chief Police Officers GUIDELINES that a fixed penalty is sent to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by 10%+2mph.

And it's just that, a GUIDELINE.

Is it really that silly as to be discounted completely ?

I take stretches of the M6 in Cumbria and Lancashire as an example of where it is not out of the question. It is clearly not going to happen on the M25 in rush hour but I still see no reason why not where it can be achieved safely. The 70 limit was brought in when car technology was not as it is now and 70 is not a realistic figure now I think.

You mean there are speed limits on the M6 in Lancs / Cumbria?! :p

I thought the guide was10%+1mph. Borrow a Sat-nav system & you'll be suprised how much you speedo is out, that's why there's a guide. My car - 74 is a real 70, so if I cruise at 80 I'm under the guide. Motorway speed limits should be variable, according to amount of traffic & conditions

I'm not sure if it has ABS. I don't say it was a big car.

Just because you have a newer car doesn't make it right for you to go at 100mph.

Fox, you still haven't answered the question.

No, I don't think its safe to do 100mph.

Did you know that every time you do 100mph on a clear Motorway, god kills a kitten?

So, it's not safe for kittens.

It's probably safer than you doing 70 in your car though. Mine will likely stop in a shorter distance from 100 than yours will from 70...

Yep doesn't justify a 100mph limit does it.

So for example if I am behind you and it's a 100mph limit and you need to brake hard for whatever reason, I am probably quite likely to go into the back of you. We all have different cars of different specifications and that's how it will likely be for a long time.

I'd agree with a 100mph limit if it were like that RAC advert (I think it's RAC) where all the cars are going through the crossroads and just missing each other by inches and the drivers not being worried...

100Mph limit isn't safe, end of really.

do people really want this 100 mph limit then if a car cant even stop at 70 as well as another can at 100 yet the limit says he can do 100?
just think about that 1

I'm not saying it was safe, I was just saying doing 100mph in my car was safer than doing 70mph in your car. I'd go as far as saying considerably safer.

I agree that the speed limit should stay at 70mph due to sheer range of abilities of cars/drivers. Anyone who drives regulary on a motorway knows that the 'real' limit is an indicated 80.

As above, plus I've already noted way up the thread that changing the limited is a bad idea.
