Motivation for GCSE's

If you don't work hard now, through your a levels and into University, then the job opportunities are very much limited and you will regret it for the rest of your life. I aren't saying that you might not get lucky, but you won't regret getting good GCSEs.

If you want a better life, then get good grades! Simple.

One of my biggest regrets so far is that I didn't revise enough for a certain exam, having to stay back on a Monday till 8:30pm to retake.

So just do it.

I'm a lazy sod and really can't motivate myself to revise or work. I keep putting revision off and always do homework at the last minute.

So how did you guys motivate yourselves and what was the end result?

Thanks

You have over 2 months till your exams. If you're quite intelligent there's no need to revise now.

I did my GCSEs in 2010. I started light revision a couple of weeks before exams, and then during exam season just did night before revision, and I did fine.

There's no need to motivate yourself just yet. When it dawns on you that your exam is in 2 days, that will be motivation enough ;)

Because the end result of good grades at GCSE level leads to A-levels, which leads to higher qualifications and useful degrees. Ultimately more income for less graft, roughly speaking.

Or you could spend your adult life stacking shelves in tesco's for minimum wage.

As you're only 16 you might not appreciate how valuable your time now really is. By all means enjoy yourself, but don't forget that what you do (or perhaps don't do) now could have far reaching implications for your future.

Just about everyone over the age of 25-30 will tell you that they wished they'd spent a little more time studying and a little less time getting ******-up and having a good time (for example).

Take it from those who have the benefit of being alive and making their way in the real world for twice as long as you have been alive and breathing; DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND YOUR CHANCES.
You will regret it if you do and only really come to understand what motivation really means when it might be too late to do anything about it.

/sermon. :o

Oxbridge pretty much require 8A*s plus, if you're not at that level then you have work to do to get to it, and if you don't work your closing doors for yourself. Given the competition for uni places nowadays it's very easy for even previously second-rate universities to require just as much much in terms of entry standards as Oxford, Cambridge etc.

No they don't.

Don't waste time or time will waste you.

Do you want to be one of those people that leaves things until the last minute all the time for the rest of your life? Really think about how you view other people who do that. If the answer's a no, try to realise that the only person that has any control over that is you.

Just do stuff. It's not hard. It's so, so simple once you just do things. Act like you've got the motivation and it'll end up being real.

Think Seriously about what things you want in Ten years time & then add the cost up & see how much you need to earn to live that life style.
Do a second list of a Crap non motivated life & see what that gets you.

I'm going to get a HUGE amount of stick for this... but my parents wanted me to do well so they paid me for each grade I got... Basically depending on the grade depends on how much I got... Did relatively well out of it to be honest.

This is false. They require high grade A levels, but I know people who got in with less than this. Saying that the chances are people who get the A levels they want are going to get good GCSE grades, but they offered me an interview despite only having 2A*,5As and a handful of other GCSEs...

Yup that is dreadful parenting in my eyes. No offense. Almost everyone I know who did pretty well at GCSE myself included received no money for it. Then people who scraped out C's etc were given hundreds in some cases. Does not compute. I kid you not when I say ANYONE can get A*'s in GCSE if they put a decent amount of effort in. I didn't put much effort in, didn't do amazingly but still came out with A*'s A's and B being my lowest. Get yourself into a good habit of revising now because A levels will mess you up if you think they'll be as easy as GCSE. I breezed through GCSE pretty much but A level is a huge step up in my opinion.

Work hard now, or you'll work harder later. Difficulty or apparent benefit (or lack of) from high grades has little to do with it.

Instill a positive attitude to work now, and you'll be sorted for life. You will begin to enjoy study. Don't get to the stage where you have no choice but to study to better yourself and remain in a crap position for X years because of it. That said, being in a crap position is a great motivator.

Record spoken notes to an mp3 file and then play it back on your personal stereo. This gets information into you passively, e.g. while you go for a walk. This is very useful for where you need to recall lots of info for an exam, e.g. history.

This is a good tip if you learn by listening but if you are visual learner then bullet point info on sheets of A3 and cover your bedroom walls. You'll take loads in that way. I remember Kreb's cycle as it was just to the left of a rather good Vanessa Paradis picture and there was no way I was forgetting that image.

I wouldn't say it's awful parenting at all - its just the old fashioned carrot and stick.

Not that I benefitted from it, I revised for one gsce and have some relatively terrible grades :o :p

I want to go to sixth form and then University. Not exactly sure what job I want, but something ICT related is what I'm thinking.

Take it from someone that's been in the same scenario and wish I could go back and change my attitude about it.

If you are sure you want to go on to Sixth Form, and possibly University afterwards, I implore you to do your best to revise.

I was someone that was considered top of most of my classes for GCSEs, and thought it was below me to revise. I despised revising. The GCSEs I faired very well at, and came away with good grades despite not revising. Where it really stung me was the jump up in to Sixth Form.

In my opinion, you can not get through Sixth Form without putting in a lot of effort, and this includes many hours of revision a week. I tried, and I would do brilliantly in my lessons and be fine, but as soon as it came to sitting down on my own, doing coursework, exams etc, everything just blanked in my head. As I said, take it from someone that's been there and honestly do all you can to revise and make it stick. I found that out the hard way, and in many different ways I'm kicking myself that I didn't try harder.

A lot of people may still stay "Sixth Form is easy" "A levels too easy" etc etc. Ignore every single person that says it. Go in there with the mindset that it will be hard, and prepare for it to be hard. If you find you're doing really well and you're getting the hang of everything, then excellent! Reward yourself for doing it. But this works on the flip-side - if you know you're finding something a bit hard to grasp, or a certain area is causing you a bit of trouble, put time aside to work on it and nail it. If it means missing a TV show, you can watch it later. If it means missing a movie with some mates, then it means missing that movie. Your education is one of the great stepping stones into life, please please please don't throw it away for some silly reason.

Send me a trust message if you really want to talk about it, but I cannot stress enough how much effort you need to put in to make it work.

It seemed to work.. I beat my predicted grades by some way and ended up with something like 12 GCSEs b+

As a side point, I've now done my 5 a levels with no incentive, did similarly well, and a, doing well at uni. To be fair I was always capable of doing well, and have proven it since xD

In retrospect it worked pretty well, as nitefly said, old fashioned carrot and stick xD
