Why. A car will happily drive itself in gear. The lack of grip just meant the wheels spin without the car moving.
 
Tomorrow when you're out driving, put it in first, let the clutch up slowly and remove your feet from the pedals.

Depends on the car, my Dads 1.6 focus and my old 1.2 Fiesta definitely stall, but my ST doesnt, it does move forward. I believe it's down to torque of the engine.

Even my 45bhp 1.0 Nova would do it with good enough clutch control. It's far easier in a Diesel as there's a lot more low down torque than a typical 16v Petrol engine.
