I wonder if they got government approval for the payment this time round?

A guy I work with is from Venezuala, and he insists that Maldonado is in F1 on merit, not just because PDVSA paid for his seat. Now I can show him how much they paid :)

If only we knew what 'option 3' was...

option 1 - 10M - excellent drive, thrashed Rubens
option 2 - 20M - reasonable drive, matched Rubens
option 3 - 27M - mediocre/poor drive, here have lots of money
option 4 - half of venezuela split between bernie and frank - lost his super licence

i wonder how much senna is bringing, williams might be able to do something with that kind of money. it could quite easily be a mockup though

Crazy world we live in, that sponsorship agreement would have been williams full budget the last time they won the title in 97 :D

I can't believe that's a real sales invoice for them though. I hope to god it's not anyway :(

Lets keep things in perspective guys, £30m is not that much in relation to F1 budgets across the board now a days. Also, Williams lack sponsors, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was a sizeable percentage of their total budget this year anyway.

I think that's a serious amount of money myself to plow into an average driver in a very poor team. That's far above what we are used to hearing for paid for seats.

I've been used to hearing about 1 or 2 million, or Justin Wilsons struggle to sell himself for his career earnings. Nothing like 30 million sterling.

Do we have much information at all on what paid seats have cost? I think the Di Resta seat at Force India is rumoured to be worth £10m to them (covering the engine contract).

Williams were quite clearly going for whoever paid the most with their drivers through, so its possible that PDVSA have paid enough to ensure that they are at the top of the list.

Few paid for seats have also covered major sponsorship for the team though. PDVSA must be the major backer of Williams now, with the loss of AT&T (although I'm not sure they actually paid much for that deal).

There was a F1 Forum show on the red button last year towards the end of the season where they discussed this.

iirc it was Brundle who said that pay drivers are bringing £12-£15 million minimum each, to the team.

With the lack of testing and the rise in paid drivers, its a worrying time for young guys and girls in the lower formulas. It used to be that the F3000/GP2 champion would be guaranteed a space on the F1 grid the following year, but skipping over these guys in favour of someone else with a larger cheque must be mighty tempting to most mid field F1 teams.

Best looking. GP3 driver. Ever.
