Motorsport Off Topic Thread

It's not pretty good, it's awesome. We popped in back in 2005 or 2006, when we went to watch the BTCC and it was snowing outside... just thought of getting out of the cold, but it was much better than we were expecting.

Personally I enjoyed it far more than going to see the likes of Autosport International, as you aren't getting shoved out of the way every 5 seconds. You can just wander around at your own leisure and take in the beauty of some real history.

Yeah, we went one day during the week earlier this year. There was only us looking around and some old mechanic guy wheeling one of DC's McLaren's out of the exhibition :p

Donnington's only down the M'way from me, should go more often really. Thinking of taking my Dad at some point as he used to hang around old race cars as a boy with his uncle who was a racecar mechanic. He'd love the Vanwall and BRM stuff.

I wonder if Dave Richards will express an interest only for Bernie to go out of his way to be deliberately difficult? Didn't Bernie say not long ago he wanted to drop a team?

Bernie doesn't have a say in it - the FIA decides who gets in, not FOM.

I'd be happy to just have the beeps as each red light goes out at the start, and Bernie hanging from a cloud over the start/finish line telling the drivers which lap they are on.

Odd, why 2015? There isn't a major rules change then is there? So the teams still have to go through the pain of making the cars fit the 2014 limit (about 640kg, isn't it?) and then in 2015 have to bolt a load of lead on for no reason other than the FIA are too slow to realise the errors in their own rules?

Unless they think the cars next year will all be about 700kg anyway, which given the pain of carrying extra weight, seems rather unlikely?

640kg is the 2013 cars. the 2014 cars' weight limit was increased to 690kg to account for the extra weight of the engine

*edit*
a quick google tells me that Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus blocked the weight limit changes for 2014, so presumably they realised that the weight limit might be a struggle and put extra effort into making the car lighter

Or their drivers are already well underway with their fasting :p

In light of the move in F1 to driver-chosen numbers, I thought this was interesting - Austin Dillon to race the #3 in the NASCAR Spring Cup Series next year.

Now, this is properly serious business in NASCAR fandom (or is it fandumb? ;)). That number hasn't been used in Cup since that awful day at Daytona in '01. DW makes some good points in that article, and we are talking about the grandson here of someone who ran that number before The Intimidator started driving that car. As far as I'm aware, the only number in NASCAR competition that is actually retired is the #61 in the Wheelan Modifieds series.

Not sure what the fans will make of it, mind. Especially if he's not running at or near the front.

Career numbers in NASCAR have been around for a while, so there has been history and tradition built up with them.

It will be completely meaningless in F1 for decades until the history has built up around certain numbers.

Also have it in Superbikes (world and national series) and Motogp/Moto 2/3.

Would be good to see "Red 5" again...:D

You can see Red Five any time you want with the number of videos out there on the 'tubes. Mansell really was a scintillating talent though - that pass on Piquet at Stowe corner in '87 is the stuff of legend!

Ive seen many drivers and Mansell is my all-time fave driver. He was the reason I started following F1.

I think the closest thing I have seen to Mansell is Hamilton. Its just a shame that the 2013 F1 rules don't suit that 'gung-ho-balls-to-the-wall' driving style.

I can't believe I missed out on that '87 overtake!

My parents went, and were at Stowe, but they didn't take me! So annoying, I can't belive they did that!

Of course, I was 12 months old, but still, that's hardly an excuse! :p

He made a big impression on a 9 year old I can tell you. First race I saw on TV was the '85 GP of Europe...
