Motorsport Off Topic Thread

The gif is epic, I hope the video is partly in jest but... it doesn't seem to acknowledge how awful it is. Normally a joke video/advert would somehow make it clear it was making a joke out of itself.

Mclaren and media, they just seem to do really odd things, they certainly seem to aspire to the saying there is no such thing as bad pr.

The thing that kicked off the thread was

more cringe worthy stuff, sure pr, have Alonso smell(I presume not taste) match the right oil for his engine... woo.

This was very recent, another cringe worthy moment from Mclaren PR. I'm sure Alonso had to do crap like this with Mclaren last time, still find it odd he signed up with them knowing this. I do think he hadn't intended it to be Mclaren until Ferrari/RBR made moves and locked him out of any other option.

In fairness, all teams do terrible stuff, that from Ferrari but also Santander is god awful. Cringe worthy, clearly forced, clearly fake, clearly not a surprise but also not funny, or interesting. I guess he is pretty screwed just being with Santander(personal sponsorship?).

I actually quite like Button so don't take this as Button hate, just one of the worst adverts possible. Reading a thread on reddit about why Hamilton was happy to leave Mclaren and random links to terrible PR stuff Mclaren drivers end up doing.

That advert is pretty damn cringe worthy but also had me laughing and the gif to go with it had me in stitches. Watch the short video of the advert first.

That is so bad :D

I don't get his posturing. Who's it a threat to? Renault? RB and STR will have already paid their contracts, plus if Renault are forced to exit F1 it probably will save them time, money and embarrassment at the moment. The FIA? What does he expect them to do, build him an engine?

All their whining and bitching is just turning people against them.

I think there trying to get some sort of rule change or regulation relaxation that allows them to win again, and they seem to think they can do the Ferrari thing and threaten to quit to get their own way.

Ultimately they must want to stay in F1, because if they genuinely wanted out they would have gone already.

STR looks like a divorce that's all but done however.

Boo hoo, their appointed engine supplier don't have a good enough engine.

Pretty sure I don't care if Matey Sheets is threatening to quit. He needs to talk to Renault, not whinge to the press.

I thought teams could be fined/disciplined for bringing the sport into disrepute? Surely continually ****ging off the rules/being permanently negative comes into this somehow.

Frankly, as has been said already, personally I don't give a **** if RB leave - if they have an attitude that if they're not winning F1 is pointless then there's only one change that needs to be made, and that's not changing F1 for their benefit.

I used to quite like rbr back a few years ago but this is just a PR disaster for everyone directly involved.

Surely a company that uses f1 purely as an advert to sell its product this is exactly what you shouldn't do?
Best result would be to let rbr leave and have Renault effectively buy TR

Aren't RBR signed up to F1 until 2020 or something like that? Don't know if that means the team itself or whether RBR could sell the team to another owner such as Audi/VW or some such? Meanwhile Renault could buy TR. Wouldn't be surprised if that does actually happen.

Would Renault want to supply a single team though? A lot of money considering you won't get anyone giving you some money in return. Having a single team is also a huge development issue, as Honda have shown.

Surely this has to be some Zoolander inspired advert?
Like a parody...or joke?
Is this being shown on the telly?

No idea where it's being shown. If the title of the vid being hosted on their own channel was along the lines of "parody advert we put together from out takes" it would be superb. It could likewise be a funny skit version of an advert on a SNL type show. But apart from the awfulness there isn't a sign it is a parody. Button is doing stupid things but looking serious and no comments for a joke, even though generally when PR do a parody/joke it's to get people laughing and talking about it.

If it's parody, it's brilliant, if it's serious, it's horrifically awful as an advert but still unintentionally hilarious.

Guys, have you missed that Button is in Vodafone overals, so the clips are all 2+ years old, and it surfaced around April 1st?

Edit: Its apparently been around since 2013?

Nothing to say they couldn't own a team and supply at least one other team. Ferrari and Mercedes have done it and do so now. Renault owned a team and supplied another (RBR) between 2007 and 2011.

I think his point was more, Renault bring in money from selling engines to two teams today, call that £50-60mil a year income which goes into development but it's a way to recoup costs. If they bought one of the only two teams buying engines from them, they are increasing costs(by owning a team) and losing £25-30mil income. If they bought say Lotus and kept supply two teams they would bring in more money, there would be more financial incentive to spend more developing an engine.

I mean Merc can bring in more money from their engines so can afford to spend more money on their engines. Ferrari have two teams buying engines off them and extra cash from stupid deals with Bernie so also have more incentive to spend more. Renault without Ferrari like income and with less teams to supply engines to would be in a tough spot financially.

Even if it cost more to buy Lotus than TR, at a certain point it would likely be more financially sensible 50mil more upfront to buy, but having an extra team buying engines off them for maybe the next decade. Of course, if they make a very good engine you'd have more teams wanting to buy the engine off them. However short term buying a non Renault team could be better financially, would give them more leeway to spend more on developing the engine and would help them get a better engine sooner(talent matters but ultimately Ferrari have supposedly upped their budget by 100mil, brought in more people and got the job done).
