ODI's for life! Currently using the TroyLeeDesigns pattern, feels so nice on the hand.
I stopped wasting time with other brands, for me they provide the right balance between grip duarability and feel.

Is there any decent MTB forums I should be signing up to?
Pinkbike.com
VitalMTB.com
singletrackworld.com

Bikeradar forums might be worth a look, not used them for years though.
most of he other UK specific forums died off/quietened down mid 2000's.

Well, I weighed up the options regarding my Avid brakes, and I chose the cheaper/short term solution.

Ordered 2 internal rebuild kits and a bleed kit.

Taking apart the Avid brakes was fairly straight forward, as was putting them back together, although I now understand why they aren't rated very highly. The piston is only held in with a fair unsubstantial plastic circlip. If they fail again in the future I am definitely going Shimano XT.

The bleed process wasn't as bad as I thought, the rear was easy to do and worked fine afterwards, but I had to do the front 3 times, I mistook a lot of air coming out of the caliper as air being sucked through a seal somewhere, when in fact it was actually air in the caliper, D'OH!

So on the third bleed I made sure there was no air at all coming back out of the calipers when using the syringes.

I would not like to do more than a couple of those per day! I wonder how professional bike mechanics think of the Avid bleed process.

Anyway, all back up and running perfectly!

Went for a ride yesterday in hamsterley which turned out to be a disaster!!

First managed to snap my rear mech bracket so had to do an emergency repair of riding single speed to keep going.

Next my bolts then sheared on the smaller cog at the front...no bother added some more links and adjusted to ride middle cog.

Going down accelerator I think it was and chain must have snapped as when I get down st the bottom it had disappeared!!

All in all quite hilarious actually!!

Dropped my bike today, scratched my pikes :/

Anyone know the best way to repair them? I don't even mind sending them away really, totally gutted.

Though I immediately found the best trail in Cypurs, 10 minutes of constant down and real berms!

When i scratched mine, the rock did a real number on the left stanchion, it went deep, had to fill as there was slight oil leakage, but when repaired wouldnt have known the difference from new(apart from the colour), but felt smooth to run your finger over.
But i still bought a replacement CSU just for peace of mind.

When you say "tacky soles" are they proper mountain biking shoes? Out of all of the stuff I've bought for mountain biking, my pair of Five Ten shoes have probably been the best investment.

They are Specialised MTB shoes, can't remember which. I went to get a pair of FiveTens but was buying bricks and mortar and they didn't have my size!

Whinlatter was good, and I made some progress. Sometimes I was in the pedals, sometimes not, and I realised that when I thought about and worked before the jump (ie took a sec to settle and prepare) I had greater success. When having to jump on the fly (har har) I was less successful :)

SO I need to pratice more so it becomes second nature to flatten the cranks, hang off my heels stand properly, and compress/spring the bike at the right point, as opposed to going "Ah, jump!".

That trio of jumps at the end of Whinlatter red south loop (2nd section) gets me everytime, I'm so unprepared after landing I almost went into a tree after the third one :)

Cheers for the advice all.

I've got an offroad route to work planned, but I went exploring down it the other day and it's really heavily overgrown with brambles and stinging nettles. Anyone got recommendations for some tough breathable trousers and long sleeved shirt?

Well my old Teva Links have finally given up, sole is parting company on both shoes at the ball of the foot to add to that they are starting to look beat to hell, so decided its new shoe time, pair of Five-Ten Freeriders in black/grey on route, it was about time i made the upgrade.

I got the black and grey Freeriders at the same time as some DMR Vaults - my word what a transformation - totally different ballgame.

Never underestimate what a decent set of shoes and flats can do for you!

I had to get new 510s, my elements are totally destroyed. And 40c isn't the right temp for them.

Still awaiting them though.

Checked my fork, it really isn't all that bad. I can't even feel it when I run my finger along it. So I may just leave it and just make sure it doesn't leak any oil.

Hearing that the newer 5/10s are shocking in realiability compared to the older ones (soles peeling and coming away from shoe), apparently this is since Adidas bought them out.

Luckily both pairs of my 5/10s (Sam hill and freeriders are both as new), quick wash in the machine every now and again and they're like new.
