I've got a HR2 2.5 super tacky DH tyre still on my bike today, about to do a 1600ft climb with a mate who's an advocate roadie.

Really not looking forward to it in the slightest, not cycled a bike in at least two months.

I went out the other night for the first time in just over 4 weeks (absolutely flew by, thought it was only 2!). Was a killer :( Always amazing how much harder it is after some time off and makes me wonder why the hell I stop.

I know this will probaly bring up just as much divided opinion as tyre choices but i'm looking to get some knee/elbow pads. Any suggestions?

I'd prefer the none hard cap ones as I don't anything particularly extreme however if their are any that are just as comfy then i'm open to suggestion.

Budgets around £100 for both.

I have been looking myself quite a bit but i'd prefer to get some first hand opinions off you guys.

I use RF ambush for elbow and RF indy for knees.

Spot on I find, although the ambush elbow can get a little sweaty on occasions I'd rather that than smashing an elbow into 43 different pieces.

I'm rockin' Fox Racing Launch Pro on the knees. Pretty comfy in all honestly but I do find myself readjusting them after a few sections but my legs are skinny :D

I have the fox launch pro, seem all good / comfy / etc

my rule is that if im doing something that requires knee pads, you want ones that are going to protect you properly, I dont bother with pads on a normal ride, just on push up / dh / jumpy stuff

the poc ones look good too but much £££

Ok, so I've got a budget of £1k (ride to work scheme).

I need everything, bike, gear, lights, helmet. Mainly do an off road route to work, it's 12 miles each way. Quite hilly. Any recommendations?

Guy at work sent me a link to one of these which looks cool.

Sounds like you'd be better off with a hybrid.

I wouldn't touch that Pine with a bargepole, what's it trying to achieve? What's it trying to be? What's it going to be good at?

I don't think a hybrid would work, would probably sink in the sandy bits and not last long over the bumps and through the mud. There's a decent looking Cannondale 27.5" 2016 model on tredz for about £600.

I think I'd prefer this, which is near identical yet £200 cheaper and probably weighs a load less too:

I'd choose this and put some chunky cyclocross tyres on it. Belt drive for commuting makes so much sense.

2016 models are getting hard to find now though - might need to wait for the 2017 modles to hit the shops.

That Marin is supposed to be quite fun. The plus tires would help take the edge off being off road - the lack of suspension requiring maintenance is a definite plus with a commuter bike.

Hard tails only require the forks wiping over from time to time. Youre not really saving much in the way of maintenance losing a front fork.

i'm riding a Giant Revel 4 at the moment so probably wouldn't notice 18kg. Route snaps (minus a bit of road): http://imgur.com/a/eNDqZ

I detest road cycling, would love to do more offroad - another reason for not wanting a hybrid.

I'm relatively new to all this, just heard from HR that the scheme only runs with Evans Cycles...

That bike can't possibly weight 18 kilos.

You do not want a bike that weighs 18 kilos - you'll hate it. Get the Revel 4 on the scales - I bet it won't reach 18 kilos.
