Done like that to be able to fit a water bottle.

I quite like the look though. Won't be my next bike mind. But then I won't be getting a new bike for at least another few years.

I'm at the beginning stages of looking for a new bike but I don't really know where to start!

Currently have a Matts Merida 40-D, circa 2010 but I don't know for sure. Bought it third hand off my brother for pennies after my Specialized Hardrock Pro got nicked.

Here's some examples of the type of riding I do at the moment but my intentions are to do much more off road and less on road. I suppose I do more XC than "trails" but it's much of a muchness really, except I don't do any barrelling down black runs.

but also things like the Marin Trail etc.

Budget... That's the question. I don't really know. Probably between £750-£1000 but it depends what is worth spending for a noticeable upgrade. I imagine at this price range I'm looking at hard tails? I'm more than happy to buy a "last years" model if it gets me something better for a lower price, which is why I've started looking now. Or am I likely to regret not upping the budget enough to get a full suss? I've never ridden one so I have no idea. I wouldn't rule out second hand either.

Can anyone shed some light on where I should probably be looking based on the above?

I'd feel much happier spending £800 than £1100 if it's not taking a huge hit in performance as I will have some gear to buy too. On One looks good. I guess it comes down to how they feel to ride too (not that round a shop's car park quite cuts it..). My local bike shop only seem to stock marin and specialized

i'm riding a Giant Revel 4 at the moment so probably wouldn't notice 18kg. Route snaps (minus a bit of road): http://imgur.com/a/eNDqZ

I detest road cycling, would love to do more offroad - another reason for not wanting a hybrid.

I'm relatively new to all this, just heard from HR that the scheme only runs with Evans Cycles...

Ended up going with the Iroko 2. https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-iroko-2-2016-mountain-bike-EV244133

Ordered last week when it was in stock with a 10 day turnaround. Hope they have one for me!

The very opposite end to you :p

Mate that I ride with a bit has recommended a Voodoo Bizango 29er. I see it won MBR best hardtail for under £750 this year.

The On One is out of stock at the moment, can anyone point out the main differences between the Voodoo and ones like the On One/Bird Zero? I know the Voodoo costs considerably less but what's the areas that this would show?
