Mountain Biking

I actually feel like testing out some Butcher and Purgatory.. I can't say I've noticed any on the regular bike shops? Are they available in 27.5?

Just be sure to buy them in the Grid casing, the regular (control) casing is woefully thin. leisure lakes bikes has the tyres in stock, think Freeborn has some too.

Oh I was going to go for the Grid casing, I need strong tyres just because I'm a proper porker now I've not been biking for so long, I wasn't exactly fit and in shape before :p

Is that Vertstar on both, or just the front?
How you finding the wear rate on them - you ride pretty rocky terrain usually don't you?

Vertstar on both, my rear usually ends up in tatters after a couple of days of uplifts at Stiniog.

I made my last one do for a full summer season, where we were doing 1-2 uplifts week, and it literally has knobs missing & some just hanging on by a thread. I should have replaced it half way through last Summer but was being a tight ass. :D

Ah, thought as much. I've been stingy on my MM for that very reason, and also the reason I got some HR2s. The only thing I dislike about the HR2s, is that they seem to fanny fart more when set up tubeless (they're not tubeless tyres mind, so I guess they're not really to blame).

anyone tried those new transitions? suppressor looks good
im guessing it would ruin things running a 150 pike instead of the recommended 160?

anyhow think next frame might be the spitty (can keep my nice shock then)
what size though ? have an xl santa cruz which is good size for xc / climbing and i like the TT length but cant get the reverb any lower than fully inserted (which when extended is the right pedaling height) want it to be fun on stuff like rogate / tidworth / aston but still can do the odd lap of swinners etc (im 6'2" - 3" ish)

Only rode the patrol, sick as bike - love it. No it wouldn't ruin things, the A2C length isn't that much different. I would prefer the 160 personally though.

XL Santa Cruz what? SCs come up teeny weeny compared to most modern bikes. At 6.2 however, based on how I prefer bikes, I would opt for XL spitty.

Yeah I'd like 160's but my 150 pikes are new and don't fancy getting new forks yet! Might go spitty for this and can buy it no shock and keep my dB inline (same size woo)

As long as its not like riding a gate I'd go xl

Gents,

Just received my first bike with disc brakes (BB7's), and although it's a road bike (don't shoot!) I'm assuming you lot have more experience with discs!

I've been attempting to 'bed' them in and it feels like there is a lack of stopping power, and awful squealing noise.

Seems rather greasy for new rotors and pads... I'm assuming this isn't right?

I've ordered some new organic pads and some Muc-Off disc brake cleaner.

Although the lack of power & squealing are symptoms of contamination, there's not much any of us could advise you on without physically looking at the bike. The squealing could be a slight misalignment of the caliper & the lack of power simply because the brake is new.

The black residue on your finger is common of wear on any brake pad, if you rarley clean your bike you'll see it build up around the brake and maybe on the frame near where the brake is attached too.

Give it all a good clean, stick new pads in and see how you go?

Best thing to do is clean the pads and discs thoroughly with isoprypol (95% alcohol). When ever i get a squeel a good cleaning cures it. If the pads get "glassy" just run some sand paper on em then clean em. Hydraulic breaks are very tempremental and get contaminated extremely easy.

Compared to the Nickel, it will initially looks / feel like a gate, but just trust me on the long/low/slack thing – it works

The Pikes are easily convertable from 150 to 160. Theres a small part you need to buy and it's a home job. I used to have the part number, but some googling will yield it pretty easily for you.

I must say regarding disc brakes, most of the ones I have owned have needed very little maintenance past the odd change of pads. No specific cleaning or annual re-bleeds, pretty much fit & forget.

If mine start to squeel I simply assume there's some muck in there & continue to ride as normal, they go back to normal as the braking wears the muck & grime away.

I know my mate, Spud, on here had no end of trouble with a set of Formulas a while back. They were useless right off the bat and nothing seemed to be able to sort them out.

Let us know how you get on Dunks.

Random tip: Put your Disks in the dishwasher - after you've cleaned them with alchohol (or even if you don't have alchohol).

A mate of mine recommended it - best thing ever!
