Mountain Biking

yep - only wet bit was after the first big drop on s2a
so many people with £7000+ wc dh bikes who sucked lol :D:p

Aston always has a lot of bling up there, most of the newbies kinda stick to S2A as it provides a bit of progression / photo ops :p

Black race on this weekend, you should see the amount of money being pushed around ... particularly if its sunny!
anyone been to antur stiniog?

Got an uplift day there this month

whats it like compared to BPW?

I've not ridden Stinkydog, but from what I've heard

BPW: Bunny slopes
Stinky: Gnarlier than a sweaty hairy ballsack

mate i was up there with might have a go at that race next weekend on his new YT tues

was funny to watch a guy on brand new carbon demo going slower than some other bloke on a zesty :p

Haha, while I agree it's pretty funny to watch - I'll concede that it's not really a fair comparison.

I'm faster than myself on a fancybike, than me on a cheap nasty bike (or bad suspension) - and that's all that matters.

That's obviously comparing two extreme ends... the analogy starts falling apart when you factor in deminished returns on £££ spent (i.e: me on a new £3000 YT Tues VS me on a £6000 new Demo)

I've been to Antur Stiniog, it's a great day out. Really efficient uplift, so you're usually straight on a bus moments after being spat out of the trails exit.

It's a DH venue so certainly steeper and gnarlier than most of BPW, but at the same time the blue and red trails there are mainly quite a smooth surface so you can have a good time even without being a superstar on a £6K Demo. Trail bikes can absolutely get down all of it, you just might not go at the double black with quite so much oomph unless you really do know what you're doing (I don't).

oh im sure

Im slow on any bike so its fine :p
just think its nuts for people who clearly went straight out and bought a £7000 bike as an intro to riding bikes !

although id argue that S2A doesnt need a massive man bike anyhow

Honestly if I saw someone on a 7k bike and they were terrible it would not matter to me, I'd be jealous of the bike regardless. Money should not even come into the equation of riding. If they can afford a 7k bike then fair do's, they've obviously made better life choices than me as I certainly couldn't afford a 7k bike, if I could afford a 7k bike I'd most definitely have one and couldn't give a crap if someone thought I was slow.

Its like saying some ones not right in the head for buying a Ferrari when they're slow round a track in it they've bought it because they want it :).

I dont like it when people moan that trail centre car parks get full of Range Rovers, BMW's, Audis and what ever else posh car. Why do people moan about that? Swimming in the jealous sea ;).

Alright yeah I agree ...

was more a point that if you were just starting out at a new hobby you would try it out first before a massive splurge

But as long as people enjoy it who gives a darn!

Anyone been to the Mendips to ride?

id like to know this too please, drove through there in jan and looked like it could be awesome. not a billion miles away from here either.

Been thinking about it as it's just over the bridge from me (only about 15mins less travelling than you Neil) Im sure it was in MBUK a few mags back but can't find it yet...

What tyres are everyone running now? I've been out of biking a fair while and I need new ones :D Also where is decent to get them from now? Does that German site still do them on offer?

I have tyres coming out of my blinking ears - garage is full of them! (I have a bit of a rubber fetish :p )

Off the top of my head, multiples of the following types (and pretty much use all of them at the mo on different wheelsets)

- Schwalbe Hans Damps Super Gravity Vertstar
- Schwalbe Hans Dampf Snakeskin Pacestar
- Schwalbe Magic Mary Snakeskin Trailstar
- Schwalbe Magic Mary Super Gravity Vertstar
- Specialized Butcher Grid (Grid casing being similar to Schwalbe super gravity, intended for heavier duty use)
- Specialized Purgatory Grid
- Maxxis High Roller 2 3C

Summer trail riding best Combo: Butcher front Purg back
Best local DH: Hans Dampf rear, Magic Mary front (Super Gravity casing both)
Best for unknown but potentially rough conditions with mixed terrain of Dh and pedalling (Enduro?!): Hans Dampf Super grav rear and Magic Mary Snakeskin front (can pedal this combo all day without sacrificing any pedaling ability)

Not had enough time on the HR2s, but suspect I'll only really use them in the alps this year.

Bet you're sorry you asked now haha ... and no, I didn't go all out and spend the earth... got most of them free from a mate.

ps: Hans dampfs are great, but also quite rubbish at the same time. The side knobs tear so quickly on the softer compound versions (not that the harder is all that much better), particularly if you corner hard off the back wheel.

Magic Mary F&R on the DH bike

Trying Conti Mountain Kings(new ones not to be confused with the old terrible tread pattern) on my Trail HT at the moment & getting on quite well with them.
