Mountain Biking

Off to North Wales end of May with some non-mtb friends.

Will be taking a few of them to Coed-Y-Brenin for some trail centre goodness, but can anyone recommend a fun loop near Dolgellau that I could get out early to one morning?

I’ve looked at Cadair Idris, but I’ll be on my hardtail and looks like it’ll shake me stupid :(

Ideally something natural with some panoramic views that I could smash out in 3/4 hours after getting up mega early for?

I'd seriously consider Cadair Idris - you have a few options to get up and down but unsure if it's doable in 3/4 hours! Something I've not got round to doing yet (hiked it numerous times)

You could just spend the hours at CyB though, there's some great trails there and it's very easy to mix it all up and do bits of one trail and bits of another in one loop.

There's always Llandegla - depending on yours fitness you may be able to get there and back with a loop of the red (including the black options which are FANTASTIC) in 4 hours. Even if it's 5 let your mates moan, it'll be worth it.

Climachx Trail near Mach is a good shout and not sure if its open yet but can ninja ride Dyfi Forest - Atherton trails!

Plenty of biking to be had all over Dol area, lived in Fairbourne for a time and riding can be found just following trails - ride up to blue lake from fairbourne and over the top of the hills will always be some of my favourite riding - no people for miles, just sheep and climbing! I'm jealous of your weekend.

I swapped from using Hans Dampf to the new Nobby Nic, like a lighter version still plenty of that grip though.

I'm looking to replace my Racing Ralphs with some Nobby Nics on my HT as they are too thin. Seeing a lot of bleeding around the tyre as running tubeless with Stans sealant.

I'm off to Forest of Dean over Easter.

If it's closed - don't ride it.

Done this once or twice, no idea why I didn't suggest that!

Seriously considering a boss nut evo for my first decent full suss bike. Anyone tried one? Planning on doing a lot more trail riding this year and my hardtail bizango might get a bit uncomfortable.

Atherton trails aren't technically closed as they are within the forest...the routes show on trailforks - just not an official bike park yet - if it ever will be :(

With the fairbourne up and around he could cycle down the Mawwdach trail and then up from fairbourne/friog back to Dol, easy within the time-frame he is aiming for and epic views over to Barmouth from the top and a nice fast down into Dol - could incorporate cadair into it also, come down cross foxes and back to Dol.

I have the V2 of the bossnut and love it, its heavy so climbing is a bit of a pig but its a great bike for the money and other than fit a dropper, decent pedals and change of tyres I haven't done much to it.

My mates have £3k+ bikes and I don't feel lacking compared to them and still beat them to the top of climbs.

the geometry of it is so playful and I find myself trying to whip and jump everything all the time - hence the replacing of the linkage pivot bearings already...make sure these are tight when you get it as go outdoors staff didn't check mine and it sheered off when jumping a step up. I don't blame the bike for that, more setup in the shop.

Think im just going to commit and to Cadair Idris! :D

Always wanted to do a big mountain ride, and being from Essex never had the chance.

Will probably follow this route: http://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/north-wales-mtb-routes/cadair-idris/ Is this the pony path way up?

Most people online saying it shouldn't take more than 4/5 hours in total, so will try set off from the van around 5am to be back for lunch! :p :D Not going till last week of May so hopefully the weather gods will be on my side!

Cheers for the reply dude.

It's still a fraction lighter than my bizango so it'll be an improvement for me! Advice taken on the linkage, i am a bit gutted though, Go outdoors had these for £720 earlier and now back up to £850 but even at that price its still a steal.

Part of it I believe yes. On your map, the pony path is the part of the trail coming from Cadair to the left side and just until the track drops south.

See here: http://www.snowdonia.gov.wales/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/137626/PonyPath-e.pdf

Let me know how you get on (Will you be GPS'ing the route?), it's on my list for this/next year

Will do, I’ll get it on Strava I imagine and can export a .GPX file :)

Is there any apps which can take .GPX files or something similar and give me turn by turn directions? Seems mad to spend hundred on a bike specific GPS when i’ve got a smartphone in my pocket!

I use Komoot quite a lot, can upload GPX files to that and it will route guide, works with off road as well as on road.

Great thanks. I have an Edge 520 to track all my rides. I always found using a smart phone for gps tracking would nuke the battery so invested in a Garmin device (Which pairs up with my watch for heart rate). I haven't got to worry about the charge on my phone then as the edge 520 will last a lot longer than my phone will for gps tracking.

Am thinking of buying one of these 2 bikes but am really not sure if I should go for the FS or Hardtail

Hardtail
https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/...ber/procaliber-9-7/p/23361/?colorCode=reddark

FS
https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/...-fuel/top-fuel-9-7/p/23640/?colorCode=reddark

It will be my single bike so will be used for everything (playing around on off road paths as well as being used for rides on the road )
Am mainly thinking of the FS due to my age (Almost 50 year old) as it will be more comfortable

What sort of riding will you be doing and where?

Canal paths and hard pack fores roads or mountains in the lake district and mountain bike trail centres?

For example, I live in Essex and maybe get to a proper trail centre in Wales/Lakes 5 times a year. So it made more sense for me to get a hardtail as 90% of my riding is done in Essex/Suffolk, no mountains, no rock. Saved me some money, and I don't lose any peddling power :p

Two very very nice bikes though, very jealous!
