Mountain Biking

We both have different experiences I think. The guys I've rode with on ebikes have been fitter than me on an normal bike, and can send it too. Though I generally don't ride at busy places/trail centres where this demographic is attracted to I suppose. Not sure I agree on the workout part, hour v hour it'd be intresting to see the difference espically factoring in the descending workout.

My experience is purely based on talking to and seeing quite a lot of ebikers. I generally don't ride at bike parks either but the people I have spoken to with ebikes who also ride normal bikes have all said their fitness has taken a massive hit. I never see an out of breath ebiker either. I'm sure there are some but I ain't seen 'em :p

Just noticed you're in TW @fez, where do you usually find yourself riding in this neck of the woods?

I (perhaps mistakenly!) got my partner into MTB over the past few years so we tend to do quite a lot of tame stuff.

We go to bedgebury quite often (don't pay for parking, use the A21 layby) if we want a quick lap or somewhere near by. Its quite good in the evening as well as it only takes about 1:20 to get around going at a reasonable pace. Missus likes its tame nature.

Bewl water is another nice ride if you just want a very pretty scenic ride without any real MTB as such. When the weather is nice and you go early evening its absolutely stunning.

Very close to TW is Pembery woods which has a surprising number of short and sweet trails that have been built by the locals. There are some good lines in there but its quite pokey and tight so the jumps etc reflect that.

If you are willing to drive for 1-1/5 hours there are loads of places. Surrey hills are great but busy. Swinley is really good if you want to do a lap rather than a series of short up and downs. I have been meaning to go to the Bull Track at Crowborough which is supposed to be really good and only 20 minutes outside TW. Rogate is supposed to be great.

That just depends how much effort you put in.
I'm out of breath most days just from commuting home as there's a big hill before my house.. I could just put the bike into turbo, a higher gear and hardly any effort, but I'm usually in trail mode or eco and use a little leg power instead.
Some days I do feel lazy though and just turbo up the hill :P

... I just don't like having to listen to people on them explain how they aren't being lazy and they get just as much of a workout as anyone...

Then maybe stop listening to them.

I'm sure I'm not alone in that as I've got older I've lot less patience for people I just don't enjoy talking to. So I just don't.

Thanks! I go through Pembury on the quick evening route I do but otherwise have been going to Bedgebury. Thinking I might go to the Downs this weekend if it's not ridiculously hot. I have a trip to the Surrey Hills planned in a fortnight so will be trying there too :)

Say goodbye to your shins/calves/any bit of flesh they can devour :D They seem to draw blood even when I'd just walking past the bike, 3ft away :p

Lol, yeah I was just looking at the pins earlier when I was fitting the pedals and thought perhaps I should get some sort of shin protection..

[edit] After the first brief ride this morning coming to work, I really like the pedals so far.
The platform isn't a huge difference compared to my old pedals, but under foot, they do feel bigger and more concave.

A friend has 4 holes in his shin from the other week lol. Slipped off the pedals on the kickers at the end of the hope line, saved himself and the bike but the pedal came round and slapped him right in the shin. Oof.

Anyone got a recommendation for a bike gps computer, looking at getting out on some more xc trails for fitness so would like navigation data in front of me rather than having to stop and check trailforks/komoot on my phone

I've got a Garmin Edge 530, same as the 830 but buttons instead of touchscreen.
Previous one was touchscreen and they are useless if you actually use your bike outside, they don't play well with rain, or mud and even the touchscreen gloves don't always work well so buttons are a must for me.
530 does trail forks, kamoot and lots of others.

Yeah I'm looking at both the 530 and the Wahoo Bolt. I already have Garmin Connect due to having one of their fitness tracker watches, so might be the simpler option.

It will integrate nice, you get the training status shared across devices which is handy if you use that. If your already with Garmin makes sense to stick to it. Though I do have a Wahoo chest strap but they're much of muchness so got the cheapest one. Also have a Wahoo Kickr trainer.

Go for a garmin, 530/830 or similar.

I use a forerunner 245 as a watch and for running, and a wahoo bolt for dedicated bike GPS - it's a pain having to record on both if I want navigation on the bike GPS. Plus you get trailforks on the garmins.

Good friend came up and built the bike for me, then we tested it out at hamsterley done the red loop. 15 miles. What a loop, those trails are fantastic.

Cheers folks, 530 ordered along with a steerer top cap mount
I wanted one of those top mount adapters but they don't work with the Hope head doctor I have, different size bolts. Actually like the standard mount, incase of a crash they just move out of the way rather than snap anything.

Smashed Hamsterley again yesterday,

2 days of 15 miles & 1700ft elevation. So glad these trails are relatively local, they're actually insane. Polty's last blast, K-line at the start and then Section 13 at the end - just fantastic and seriously well maintained. If you haven't visited, I can't recommend it enough but make sure you go on trailforks / strava to cut out a 4-5 mile hike unless that's your thing...

Degla today, was all going well until the front washed out on a very loose corner after the boardwalk on B line, hitting the hard rocky ground at 25kph is less fun than you'd think :p

Got a nice dose of road rash on my elbow and shoulder, and some bruises to boot. Fortunately that seems to be the extent of it.

Have they added anything new at Llandegla yet. B line annoyed me starts off so promising then all of a sudden a climb to ruin the flow.
