Need sound clip!

On the note of hub wheel build, I have had to up my budget as no rims in 29" and 30mm width that I want are in stock so have gone for the WTB KOM Light I30 TCS 2.0. Double my initial budget for a rim but hey ho... The colour theme matches the tyres too and have gone for black spokes and nipples too. It's gonna look rather ace I think :D
heh, I don't have a sound clip myself, but it's just like this:

That sounds nice lol. If bees became firefighters!

Nice one on the rims mrk. I moved from some old small 26er wheels, to 30mm 29ers with 2.4 michelin wild enduro tyres. I've got confidence in everything now, no fear of washing out sideways or being scared of rocks etc. Just takes whatever I throw at it.

I know everyone seems to love these high engagement hubs but I hated it when I tried one, 104t I think or there about's. For so much horrible feedback through the pedals when not pedalling. Guess it depends how much chain growth you get though.

It's a shame everything within initial budget is out of stock, but I guess the upshot is that the hub and wheels can be swapped into any other bike I get in the future if I ever go full suspension etc. Least I don't need to worry about hub bearing failure any more though too and the rims/spokes are quite a bit tougher than the stock Marin ones.

Bees! I'll have to get a phone chest harness thing so I can record POV footage with the wide angle lens on the phone cam when next out once the bike is back. Should be able to get some nice 3D audio riding through the woodland

Great for climbs but no so much for the downs.
Then you ge the people of spend lots on high engagement hubs and then more on the Ochain spider to give that chainless feel on the descents but ultimately you might aswell just have bought a lower engagement hub in the first place :p

I wouldn't mind trying a new Hope hub, mines a Pro 2 that I converted to an Evo so I could use an XD freehub. Still going strong.

I had a budget hub on my MTB a few years ago and it annoyed me on techy climbs so I got a set of hope pro4 wheels with higher POE and really enjoyed it. I have just built myself a set of EX511 on DT Swiss 240s and that only has 18 POE but it hasn't bothered me yet. I think I have just become a better rider and its not such an issue anymore. I might upgrade to the 24/36 POE ratchet if the 18 ever breaks but I don't think thats very likely.

On a somewhat related note, I much prefer a quiet hub. There was something nice about the pro4 at times but theres nothing like the sound of just the rubber from your tyres on dirt. Very few high PEO hubs that are quiet unfortunately.

Yeah think you gotta look at Shimano hubs for that.
I'd always pick hope hubs for ease of servicing and parts for life.

The 18t DT swiss ratchet is pretty quiet but apparently as soon as you get back up to 36/54t its noisy again. The DT swiss is much easier IMO to service than the Pro4. Those little pawls and springs are a bit of a bugger to clean out and re-grease. The star ratchet is very very easy.

It's not just pulling them apart though. Hope are ace at being able to get hold of parts for older stuff, they'll even make you one if they don't have any.
It's why I use there brakes as well, absolutely every part available. Just wish they'd start using mineral oil instead of DOT fluid.

Yeah, thats the big thing putting me off hope/SRAM brakes. I bought a ltr or larger bottle of mineral oil a few years ago and still use it.

Quiet bike > any sort of hub noise. Its just annoying after a while and its a much nicer noise hearing your tyre on the dirt. I don't get the noisy hub thing at all. It's also easier to hear if something else on the bike is making a noise that it shouldn't be.

Definitely this! Can't stand noisy hubs now! Went out with a mate with a set of hunts the other week and asked if he couldn't afford the quiet versions!

I'd pack grease in now if I got noisey ones again, but I'd actively avoid them if I could. My DTSwiss aren't that bad, but I'd still prefer them to be silent.

The buzzing on my hub seems to be getting a little louder. Probably as the grease migrates from between the ratchet teeth.
It does seem to get other peoples attention though, so saves me needing a bell :p
I still have the 24t star ratchets too, so if it becomes too annoying I can always swap them back as it only takes a couple mins.

I'm sure you know this but you need to be very careful with the type and amount of grease you put into freehubs otherwise you run the risk of slipping and damaging the teeth/pawls. Its more important the higher the POE is.

Thats the only advantage it has IMO, its basically a bell. If you grease the star ratchet lightly with the right grease it should quieten it down for a while but I think you have to do it monthly if you want it to remain quiet.

So other than Shimano are there any silent hubs.
Another thing for Hope is how available they are by default for custom builds.

You can get onyx hubs which are silent but heavy and very expensive. Instant engagement as well. Almost every hub works on either a pawl design or star ratchet which means that when the freehub is not engaged there will be contact between the mechanism. The more POE the higher pitched and noisy that is likely to be. Grease/oil can quieten that but usually not for very long.

To be fair I was joking mostly. It would never bother me enough to have to do actual work :p.

'mates race' this weekend, terrified - just in time for the rain to grease things up. All the gnarly tracks have been picked of course.
