Mountain Biking

If my next bike wasn't likely to be an ebike then I'd be considering a more trail oriented bike myself. I ride a commencal meta sx which is plenty and I do sometimes feel its too much bike for certain places. I do love it though. Just wouldn't mind a nice light thing again.
I wouldn't mind an e bike at some point. The new Trek Fuel EXE looks good but too expensive yet.
I think an e-bike plus a hardtail would be all that's needed.

Wouldn't mind a light thing....goes to buy an ebike.... :p

What bar widths are people running?
Bought some new spank bars for the Orbea and they're about 20-30mm overall witch wider than what they're replacing however the bars on my Vitus have never been cut down so are same length as the new ones.
Is it a case of go for a pootle up the road and see how they feel? Guess it's a fairly subjective thing in reality!

Yeah it's subjective really depending on on person, type of riding and where you ride. I'd definitely go for a few rides before you decide to do any cutting. Could even slide your grips in a bit leaving some bar sticking out and ride up and down the street to get a feel for things before cutting. Don't do anything too serious though as you don't want to get impaled.

For reference I'm about 5'9" and run my bars at 760mn on my Occam and Tues.

Just getting back into MTB after 20yrs off. I've bought two 2nd-hand bikes - a Ragley MmmBop HT and a Boardman FS Pro. I live in the Yorks Dales and close to Stainburn so no excuse for not getting out. Loving it so far. :)
Nice one, decent bike's to get back at it. I've recently build a very cheap bike up from old parts I had lying around in the garage and plan to get my as back into shape! :)

I've never built my own from frame up but always fancied it. I've researched all the theory and bought the tools - just need to put it into practice. Not sure what to build though. Possibly an XC hardtail or do-it-all gravel. What have you built?

Which are you most likely to use and/or want more than the other? Difficult to really know what would be more appropriate for your use case!
Hehe, possibly both! Current line of thinking is I'm going to buy a Canyon Grizl to be a do-it-all winter bike to replace my current winter road bike. Struggling with only 25mm tyres and the steep sketchy roads around here. Will also be able to hook up nice bridleways and do some off and on road routes. Then I'll build an XC for off-road days when I fancy a blast. Currently at 4 bikes, plus a Wattbike Atom, so another one or two should be acceptable! N+1 and all that. ;)

Both will be great builds, I built a XC bike.
Great. What frame? Looking for ideas!

Went out for a little 12k ride this morning, planned to stick to roads due to mud but that didnt last long, came home covered in mud :D

Mudguards work it seems, or just buy a plastic overcoat thing like they used in that test :p I'm guessing DIY shops sell them for painting
I see way too much dog poop to not want them.. away from built up areas it seems they mostly just leave the dog mess on the floor instead of bagging it.

I usually always have a front, but I haven't delved into the world of rear mudguards, I tend to be a fair weather rider :D

Just ordered some mudguards myself and they certainly aren't cheap :O and I don't care if the back one looks ugly as look as it stops me getting sprayed, I'll cut it down though so it only covers about half the wheel I think

Been raining almost everyday since I bought my bike :(
I need to make something to protect the bottom bracket area as well, guess I can cut some old tyres up ands just zip tie them as a mud flap like on those old rally cars.

Bottom brackets are like £20 these days and super easy to replace? Just give it a clean now and then instead, probably more chance of holding water and grit inside the tyre or the zip tie rubbing on the paint.

Use some helitape if you want the paint staying perfect?

I'd rather try and avoid mud building up around the bottom rear pivots for the suspension and it's an ebike so I don't like the idea of any water/moisture being able to enter the frame.
there's rubber grommets at the cable routing ports but the bottom wire is a Bosch speed sensor wire that's really thin and there's a pretty big gap still in the grommet. I could probably just put some bluetack on it though

Those pivots are probably getting splattered no matter what goes down there though.

I've saw some peoples bikes that have a modified front fender down there like this which imo doesn't look terrible.

I'm sure its all sealed inside but I have heard horror stories about ebike electronics gettings wet and causing issues.

Went to Farmer Johns for the first time on Good Friday. Not a bad place, mostly flowy trails with some decent jumps and some tech and steep dh sections towards the end of runs. Theres some pretty big jump lines there aswell. Not sure why its taken so long for me to get other there as its less than an hours drive for me.
