Mountain Biking

Can't say I've tried a Brand X dropper but on my trail bike I've pretty much upgraded everything from stock bar the dropper post. Stock Orbea post, it goes up and down. Can't imagine the more expensive posts offer much more.

Maybe a different lever will offer a ligher feel ?
Yeah the lever is pretty crap but I manage. I will likely swap that in future though.

Went to look at a possible new bike today - Orbea AM 2019, barely ridden from the looks of it however in need of a good service.
if we can come to an agreement on price think i'll bite then straight in to the local shop to get it worked on.
i'd love to spend my money on a new bike but can't really justify it it even if it's nice shiny new etc.

The build begins.

My Hope bottom bracket is past it's best so need a new one, also waiting for my wheels from Moonglu should be here by weekend.
I'll make do with my Hope Tech V2 and M4 brakes for now probably replace them with Tech 4 E4 at some point.
Want to replace the cranks with the new Hope Evo 155 as well and get rid of the annoying GXP stuff.
That will do me for the long term. Time will tell if I miss a full sus.

Cool, I've got a 2021 Occam. Nice bike :)
Sale agreed so should be picking up Saturday all going well, then straight to a shop for a service!

Lovely colour!

It's not far off now, few issues that I hadn't thought of.
So waiting on a set of new rotors and a front mount.
My old brakes were 183 rear and 203 front.
So need a 180 rear and no mount and a +20 mount for the front and a 200mm rotor.
The tech 4 brakes were calling me so ordered a set those as well.

Well I bought the Orbea, would have liked slightly cheaper but that could be applied to every used thing I/anyone else has ever bought ha.
Only mod is some SLX 4 pot brakes, so have an essentially blank canvas. It's going in for a fork/rear can service this week and I hope it doesn't need much else other than a little wheel truing and maybe a brake bleed or summat, happy to do most servicing myself outside of suspension stuff, frame bearings, and the black art of gearing setup.

Orbea make such good looking bikes, enjoy it!

Had my first visit to the South downs way today.
Discovered I'm drastically unfit, the bikes great going down hill but terrible going up

Nice looking bike, like the colour. Got the same workstand.

Those maintenance jobs are well worth learning how to do yourself. Will save you lots of money and theres plenty of youtube videos showing you what to do. Particulary the the gears, shock air can and fork lower services, all very easy whn you know how :)

Hmm, so you don't need fancy tools for Fox servicing stuff? I guess yeah probably makes sense to do it myself really going forward, happy to support a local business for this time to get it back to full health then I'll service it from here on. I have watched a few gear set up vids but never seem to be able to get it right myself haha, probably just impatient!

Thanks both!

If your just doing an air can service and lower leg service which should be done often then no. Sockets and allen keys etc are normally enough. The fancy tools tend to be needed for services damper etc.

Just received a Park Tool CC 3.2, this might be a silly question but is it supposed to be bowed? I wouldn't have thought so and if its supposed the be straight then the fact that mine is bowed will effect the accuracy seem as we are dealing with 0.5mm wear with 12spd chains. When I press down on one side the other end raises by about 1cm. Looks like I need to return it

Ah fair, yeah I could probably do the lighter ones myself then, afaik it's a complete rebuild with all seals from the LBS this week. Should be done by Sat afternoon which means I can go out for a maiden voyage on the Sunday, noice.
And id've thought that tool should be straight yeah!

As it turns out the CC 3.2 bends straight pretty easily :p

Been out of the mtbs for a while but building one with some parts from a mate and some parts from my current bike.

I need 29" boost wheels and gearing. The wheels will probably be what I can find second hand but gearing I'm looking for some advice on what might be the best value.

Is 12 speed really going to be a huge step up from 11 ? My current bike is 10 speed and I manage :p

I heard that 12 speed is about one step up from 11 but you can never trust them, they used to say that 11 was one step up from 10 after all..

I think it's much of a muchness; you're probably not going to notice the difference between a 11 and 12 but if you're buying new probably makes sense to go for 12!

With regard to 11 and 12 speed I guess it ultimately boils down to how much your value your low gears. 11 speeds tops out at about 46t whereas 12spd allows for 51t and 52t with sram. I run 12sp and I changed to a 9-45 XT cassette when I needed to change as I found I never used the first gear on the 51t cassette and I now run a shorter cage XT mech with the 45t cassette
