Mountain Biking

merlin. How tall are you? out of curiosity. What would you say about the pitch comp 2015. Also do you know the weight of Marlin 7?

ty

I'm 5ft 8 1/2, 73 kilos.

The Marlin 7 is 14.4 kilos on a 19.5 inch frame.

After MUCH research I come to the conclusion that Specialized bikes at this price point are a complete rip-off. Seems to me like they pump the price up and cut the spec back and people just lap it up. For me to pick up anything from Specialized that I'd be happy with I'd have to have parted with around £800.

ah ok I see. I probably will go for the marlin then. Thanks. Would you recommend it? I was going to get the specialized one. good that I havnt then. I don't know as much about bikes as much as you.

I'm ok, thanks.
It's been sobering, and quite traumatic. But that pales into insignificance against the trauma his family are experiencing.

It was my first time at Swinley, but I am told it is called R25, and basically, there is a small descent with a couple of minor undulations before the section gets more technical.

The marks on the floor and damage to bike/helmet suggest he lifted off one bump, hit the next with a turned front wheel, which caught and buckled, before sending Mark over the bars, into what is a low point after the bump he hit.

Its a fairly innocuous part before the main drops and berms further down. Its was my first trail riding experience and it didn't look tough at that point, but clearly we had to stop, and could not take it at speed due to the incident. Maybe there was some sort of equipment failure that would cause the wheel to turn in the air or on lift off?

I believe the green circle is the section in question approximately. This was my track from the ride.

Malt, don't let this put you off going swinley, is a great place, I've been there 15 or 20 times this year.

R25 is not that technical, agreed you can get some speed up. Bit shocking really.

Are the jumps quite close together there?

I've come close to incident at Llandegla by going quick (but not quick enough) over the first jump, and hitting the side of the second one. Learned my lesson from that one and try to weigh it up first now, rolling over if necessary.

Have Swinley/Forestry Commission released anything to press? Not that it makes much difference, they can't really control what happens on the trails!

It really does look like a very innocuous part of the trail.
We all checked any trees that he might have hit in the vicinity, and nothing came up, just a big scuff on the floor on the bump of the second part, directly in line with where he was found.
Some media reports are stating that he hit a tree, but there is no evidence of that from the scene. The police were already asking questions, about how the rider was discovered, and what we thought might have happened based on our collective experience (the 6-7 riders who were with us at the scene before it was closed off totally)

There is a dodgy tree right at the very end, which I've scraped once or twice. I shouldn't speculate but some of those "doubles" are a bit too close, if he didn't lift up the bars and he was pointing he's wheel down and hit the bottom of the second double, then I can see how the wheel buckled and he went OTB. Any clue to what equipment he had

Accidents can happen on any part of the trail mate, I got two friends who have had life changing injurys and it just happens. Dont dwell on it too much and dont let it stop you enjoying riding!

Some dude went to put flowers down, not sure if it's the same spot or not.

That does not look like the actual spot from my recollection, but it's very close.

The part that is down the dip and obscured from view is where I believe Mark ended up. We were checking that tree (centre of shot, right on the side of trail) for any signs of impact whilst he was being treated.

What 650b bike under £450 would you recommend? What about the cube aim. Would it be better than Pitch comp 2015? or maybe a gt avalanche comp 2015?

The guy that laid them said he didn't know exactly where it happened.

Talk of a memorial ride on the 9th and if allowed some sort of fixed tribute like a bench at the top on the Facebook page.
