Mountain Biking

Gonna be swapping out my headset soon. Are there any extra precautions I should take when removing a headset from a carbon frame?

Replacing a headset on a carbon frame is a bit like making love to a beautiful woman.

Be gentle don't hammer it too hard, and pray you're doing it right, don't forget to get your finger right in there and grease it up.

Serious answer, get a crown race remover, it will save your from digging around with a screwdriver.

Haha, like the analogy :D .. crown race removal is from the fork steerer though, nothing to do with the carbon frame.

Spud, best tool I've used for headset removal - is a steel tyre lever, as the lip of the lever slips perfectly into the ridge on a headset. Also helps when you've been able to get a little bit of space under the crown race, the leverage that bugger out.

To press headsets, I've gone and bought a headset press from superstar... as I got tired of taping it in with a flat plank / mallet :p

I've already got a crown race remover :) Wouldn't I be better off using a proper headset removal tool like this:

Never been a fan of hammering in a headset personally, especially don't like the sound of doing it into carbon :p I'll take a look at the SS tool. Anyone tried the cheapo home made tools you can pick up on ebay for about £10?

The headset remover does the same thing, but yes, it's the safest best option as it applies pressure to all the sides (if you can call it that), at the same time.

What frame is it?
Surely there won't be any hammering onto carbon?
I thought they all had integrated bearings that dint need hammering?
I think some older frames had metal sleeves inside the headtube to hammer the headset into?

Santa Cruz V10. Headtube is bare carbon, no metal inserts.

Those of you that have recently bought a pair of Pikes - how much am I looking at for them?

I take it the Solo Air is still the one to go for? they'd be 160mm most likely.

New, probably 550ish ?

(If you're buying, might as well just buy the 27.5" version and run your 26 wheels in it)

edit: PLenty new ones on Pinkbike for less at around the 470 mark.
