Just ordered a 128GB SSD, looking for some advice about what to do when it gets here.

Current set-up (hard drive wise) : 279GB main hard drive (C: ), 140GB back-up drive (E: ). (DVD RW Drive is D: )

Where would the SSD want to go? Should it be the new C: drive, with everything else moving along a letter or should I just stick it at the end?

The SSD will be the boot drive, it'll also have any games over a few gigabytes.

Going to do a fresh install, then copy games and that over to it. What would I then do with 279GB hard drive? Is there a way to uninstall Windows from that, but keep all the files, or should I just leave it on there?

how much space does your current windows hdd take up? if its less than 128gb you can clone the hdd to your ssd no need to reinstall

if not then just do a clean install of windows(BUT SET TO AHCI MODE IN BIOS FIRST)
and drag drop games to your new ssd, some will work some might need a reinstall

you can keep your old hdd with windows on as a back up or just delete off what you dont need or back up the drive and format it and use it as extra storage alongside your ssd

set ssd as first boot device in the bios

Dead on 128GB for my main drive, going to clean that up a bit today though.

If I'd be cloning it I could always delete things like music from the SSD, since they won't benefit from being on it.

aslong as you back them up first

you can use free macrium reflect to clone the drive, what board are you using? youll need to apply this reg tweak to use ahci or else it will blue screen, all it does is allow windows to install the needed ahci drivers

just boot into windows in ide mode from your ssd, then click/run this file

then reboot into bios, set to ahci mode,save/exit,boot into windows and youll see ahci drivers being installed and thats it

Gigabyte Z68P-DS3.

Just got my main drive down to 119GB, that'll do for now. I can always keep the non vital stuff on the main hard drive rather than using precious ssd space.

shouldnt take that long,5-10mins at most

remember to run the reg file above to enable ahci if it blue screens when you set and boot in ahci mode

Personally I wouldn't bother with the benchmarks mate.

If it's doing it's thing - working well and noticeably better than your old HD (which it will be) - I would just leave it as that.
