Moving to the North

@timmothy amazed no one had asked yet...

What are your family's sports and hobbies? Do you like countryside, mountains or cities? Do you need access to a decent school etc?

It's just me and my partner. We love mountains and countryside. Don't like cities other than for work opportunities and meeting friends. We don't need access to schools etc.

We did drive around the surrounding villages of Middlesbrough today and it's absolutely amazing. Picture postcard perfect but unfortunately our of our budget. Went into Middlesbrough and parts were horrific and others seemed nice. Very difficult to get a feeling for a place

We were wondering that but then you don't have the national park on your doorstep. Also prices are much higher in the decent areas
It’s not a massive drive to coast or countryside though. The prices are higher in the top areas but decent ones are still reasonable.

How about leeds?

I know it's a budget buster but I just had to post it

Never seen anything like it before. Wonder how many bodies you could get in the outbuildings?

Holy crap. That is like straight out of a Wes Anderson movie.

Anyone from Middlesbrough have some experience with the town
I did the same after working abroad, got a job in M'boro, had a good look around, ended up living in York and doing the drive. Best move I ever made. Two years later next job was in Hull so no worries.
Not knocking M'boro either, friendlier folk you will never meet.

Difficult to put recommendations in without a feel for what you'd need re: job.

Personally (and with some bias, as a Geordie) I'd move further north and concentrate your search around Newcastle, rather than Middlesbrough. Morpeth is certainly a nice town, possibly out of budget if you are insistent on a detached. However, the satellite towns on/around the Newcastle-Carlisle line to the west may give you good value and with great transport links. Initially I was thinking Hexham, although options may be limited there.

How about somewhere like Prudhoe? Small village, countryside around and you are about 20mins drive to the outskirts of Northumberland National Park to the north (inc. best part of Hadrian's Wall and the Whin Sill), or the North Pennines AONB to the south, and only 15mins drive into Newcastle. Beautiful part of the world with some spectacular scenery on your doorstep. Quick scan of Rightmove, there are standard detached houses available from £180k in Prudhoe, a barn conversion at £225k in nearby Stocksfield or some interesting 'doer-uppers' further out in the sticks to the west - as examples.

I can't vouch for living there but, of your initial suggestions, Stirling left a favourable impression when I passed through a few years ago.

Prices are higher for a reason though, this is the general jist of the property market.

A real life example, my niece just got a stunning 3 bed 3 level detached front and rear gardens masses of parking, next to the sculpture park Yorkshire, her partner's a.sparky so on my last visit, busy with a rewire, obviously needs bits doing but 200k

Does it really have to be detached, I feel that's your main limit atm. There are some really nice houses up here in the Consett area and your right in the middle of everything. Durham/Northumberland/Newcastle all within touching distance.

Have you looked on the west side of the north?
The Furness area of Cumbria, which is south of the Lake district & around 20 mins drive to the national park area.
I'd avoid Barrow in Furness, although their are plenty of job opportunities there at the moment. BAE(build our Nuclear subs) is recruiting heavily at the moment.
Somewhere like Askam in Furness might suit within your budget. It has a fantasic beach within walking distance & you can get to the quieter parts of the lakes easily.

This was the first image I got of the place when dropping in to street view

Granted it hasn't been updated since 2009!

Haha, probably that part doesn't look much better tbh. The fella does have a very low budget, so he has to compromise somewhere. If he had a higher budget I would have suggested a prettier area of Furness(in housing stock anyway.)

Northumberland National Park, Kielder Forest Park, Northumberland Coast Area of Natural Beauty and North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty are all within reasonable driving distance. Plus the coast at Tynemouth. I wouldn't discount it.
