Mozilla says beware Google use Bing

FYI

MOZILLA'S DIRECTOR of Community Development, Asa Dotzler has reacted negatively to anti-privacy comments made by Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, and suggested that users should switch their Internet searches from Google to Bing.

I switched to Bing some time ago now (great search engine by the way) - Google have got to big and are involved in to many facets of everyday life. I view them as far more malevolent a force than MS have ever been

It never ceases to amaze me how little people care about privacy. The argument that it's OK because "I have nothing to hide" make one crucial assumption: that the organizations in possession of your information are – and always will be – wholly benevolent. This is rather tenuous.

95thrifles: how would you feel about both the government and private organizations, given the technology, monitoring your very thoughts? It seems to be a fairly natural extension of your views, and yet I can't quite imagine how anyone could condone that. It's precisely the subject of George Orwell's 1984 – surely this illustrates the potential consequences?

Are you saying I should stop using my Google services and throw my HTC Desire in the bin?

Madness!

Bing is a terrible search engine IMO. Used it for a few days and I was completely lost on the internet. Couldn't find as much useful and relevant stuff compared to Google.

Both Google and Bing are competent search engines although personally I find Bing tends to bring back more directly relevant results for me most of the time.

Aren't Google now embroiled in a row with quite a number of European governments including the UK over the Streetview project monitoring home wi-fi networks? Yet another example of "Big Brother Creep".

There is a thread atm on the internet & connectivity section. It regards ACS Law issuing internet users with claims for money and court action regarding illegal downloads. when you read up about ACS law it emerges they monitor ISP's then apply for court orders to get peoples details. a lot of these people are innocent but are still targeted.

I think this highlights how easy it is to get peoples details on flimsy evidence and how easy it is to accuse the wrong people. Its easy to say "ive got nothing to hide, im ok with being monitored" still doesnt stop your from being accused of a crime tho.

goes a long way in showing how a system can be abused or incorrectly implimented regardless of best intentions. Before you know it, laws that were meant to protect you are suddenly working against you
