MPs try to overturn 'God can heal' ad ban

*sigh*

God does not exist. It's BS. You may as well believe in Leprechauns or Tir na Nog

Do you believe in aliens? I admit, I don't.

But as anyone can tell you, we inhabit a tiny, tiny fraction of the universe. To make a pronouncement that God does not exist, is not something that any of us can do with certainty.

The people in the OP are demanding indisputable scientific evidence that prayer does NOT work. They seem to be quite certain that God does exist and that prayer does heal even without the slightest proof themselves of either point.

Aliens exist. Whether they're intelligent is another question, and i mean obviously they're not the little green men riding round in saucers visiting people in Texas, but you know :p

Depends on your definition of god. If it's like the pantheist view that the word 'god' is basically a synonym for 'everything' then sure, god exists. But if it's that creepy insane dude with the beard that created everything in seven days, that's just stupid.

I mean it doesn't even answer the question it sets out to. It just moves it around and makes it bigger. Why is life here? Oh, it was created by this massive super intelligent life form... why the hell is he here?

Someone with so much to say regarding almost anything to do with religion and that's all you've got? That's it?
To be fair your own contributions in the last debate weren't much to write home about ;)

I'm assuming that some people prefer to comment only to correct a misunderstanding, not be the poster child for Jesus :)

Aliens exist.

Aliens probably exist, we can say this based on the wide range of life observed here on Earth, and the vast size of the universe and the hundreds of planets we have discovered so far.

You cannot simply say "aliens exist" though, in the same way you cannot say a deity exists.

When Gary isn't claiming he's been healed by a miracle he's busy working for us on important matters like the threat from cat poo - http://www.publications.parliament..../cm111021/text/111021w0001.htm#11102147001246

I'm not a religious person but whatever people want to believe is fine by me, I do object to them peddling nonsense like this which threatens the health of other people. Interesting to see that the good Christian Mr Streeter voted strongly in favor of the war on Iraq, I wonder if he thought God would heal all of our troops as well.

Quite amusing response in the Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/the-lay-scientist/2012/mar/26/1

Has god ever regrow a severed limb on someone? No because its always one of those medical conditions that can, left on its own, improve on its own anyway in some cases!

FACT 1: people around the world worship (or don't worship) different gods but we dont see one group have much better heath outcomes when adjusted for environmental factors (poverty healthcare, diet etc). So it does not appear that worshipping (or not) a particular god has any reliable tendency to improve health outcomes for a person.

FACT 2: no reputable study has shown that faith healing/ prayers being said etc works at any level. In fact in some studies where subjects were prayed for they had a slight tendency to perform worse medically that the ones not prayed for with a hypothesis that this may have been due to a level of 'performance anxiety' as they were worried about getting well due to the fact they knew they were being prayed for!

The ASA was right to remove this downright ridiculous claim.

Of course a study on prayer is going to be inconclusive, that would be tantamount to proving God exists, which clearly God does not wish to be proved because that removes faith.

ASA should keep it's nose out and worry more about those seeking to profit from misleading claims, not to tell religions what they can't believe in

wow, was that really worth typing, it's not like we haven't seen it a million times already.

The problem is that religion takes up valuable time and resources even though it has proven time and time again to be a very ineffective way of spreading what little good we have in this world.
