MSI GTX780 Lightning due 07/08/13

One, try four ;)

Do want.

8 pack, tell gibbo to get as much stock as possible :p

To put its size into context, those outter fans are the same size as the fans on the tfiv coolers on the last gen, those cards were a good 12" long...it's probably longer then a 7990.

That is pretty awesome, means it could be temp stuck on a uni block while ek get stock ready. I take it msi are now officially 'cool' with cooler removal then?

Are we going to find out what happened on the 7th neliz now that the red mist has cleared? Many are pointing to shortage of hynix & Samsung IC's.

Well that clears that up :)

That's great news about the cooler, I knew msi were 'ok' with it but I had been hearing recent reports of void if removed stickers being placed on some msi cards.

Tbh everything did point to a lightning rather then hawk release on that day, which as you say is where all the assumptions came from.

20 phase all in all, impressive, this card is going to cripple my hx1000 with all that power, time to invest in an antec hc 1200 me thinks.

The classy is only something like 14phase, I think we'll be seeing 2ghz out of these.

Is that an assumption or a fact? the 780 Lightning isn't really longer than the 680 Lightning, so who's saying that the fans are that size?

Just an educated guess, if this means the outer fans aren't 10cm, then they're 92mm, making the center fan 72/80mm, which in turn would drop card length.

My measuring logic: if it's 100+100+92mm, is 292mm excluding gaps and cooler casing, so we can safely throw another 40-60mm to cover those areas. So for a rough guess looking at the presumed dimensions (I couldn't see any on packaging, nor a mention of fan size) that's around 330-350mm in length which = around 13.5", probably slightly less.

Now if we presume I'm completely wrong and the fans are indeed smaller, then it should tip in at around 12.5 - 12.75"

Am I close? :p

Looks like ELPIDA memory. Surprising they would put that on a 780 instead of Hynix or the new Samsung memory thats on the 770's.

Fairly sure elpida is tighter then both hynix and Samsung, once it clocks up it should be more efficient, better efficiency = better scores. Even if this means losing a little on speed.

Think my first 7970 lightning had sammy ic's and would bench 1975 without correction.

^it's Singapore dollars retro, $1spd = 50p roughly.

Titan is nvidias baby much as the 690 is/was, they want it kept 'as is' by all partners, its a shame for the consumer, but let's face it, a stock lightning is likely to match/beat a stock titan, unless you need the 6gb memory, it's a no brainer to buy the lightning for ~£200 less.

The new stumbling block is the news amd are certain to release their high end hd9000 cards in around 6 weeks time.

I don't think elpida is going to be much of a problem, msi will have their reasons for picking it over hynix/Samsung.

I think 780's need about 13% extra clock speed to match Titan, that's not much at stock speeds but a big ask for the pro overclockers.
I have an MSI 780 TF with Elpida and it's weak, I'm not an serious overclocker but for me it seems so temperature sensitive and just falls over taking the card with it unlike Samsung which gives plenty of warning.

Apparently some have been using this because Samsung is short supply, bet your life cheaper also ;) strange Asus managed to get some for their Direct CU 780's.

The main rumour I'd been hearing is that Samsung chips were being snapped up mostly by amd's board partners, which is where the suggestion of shortages came from, though neliz said earlier in the thread that both Samsung and hynix were all readily available. For all we know the elpida ic's being used could be highly binned parts, in which case it shouldn't be much of an issue, but as with everything, we won't know for sure until it's tested :)

Again, I swore to neliz I wouldn't reveal any of what he told me yesterday :)

Not as long as I first thought is about as much as I can say, official dimensions are only a few days away anyhow.

You got a monsta in the front or something??

I don't think it will breach the £600 mark, usually £50-70 more then reference, which given ref and gaming edition msi 780's can be had for £500, that puts it around the £575 mark imo.

Remember ocuk have a great relationship with msi, today only price drops on the previous lightnings were as much as £80!! So don't be too disheartened if the initial retail price comes up high, no doubt gibbo will make way to have some big price drop specials :D
