MSI's pricing for R9 290/290X - OUCH

Stop buying these cards if you don't want to keep paying silly money. Please don't complain then go out and buy one anyhow.

I'm used to being shafted by Nvidia anyway, if the cards are £450ish I might switch... something new to play with.

FoxEye has hit the nail on the head.

People will pay silly money because it's "new tech" its not new,it's still a graphics card which is a little bit faster but more ££££.

I've not bought a new graphics card for 3 years (Sapphire 6870 1GB)

In that time I did own both an Xbox 360 and PS3 though.

I've made a concious decision not to buy any of the next gen consoles and have spent the money I might have spent on buying maybe a PS4/Xbox One on a complete new PC.

This included provision for a new graphics card.

I think I'd pay maximum £450 for an R9 290x on the basis that it should last me at least another 3 years, if not much longer (hopefully for the full cycle of next gen consoles)

I can sort of justify it that way.

If you are the sort of person that upgrades every year though, then you are playing in to their hands as prices go up.

Im with you on that one,i personally don't buy the newest card as its a waste of money to me,in 6 months time the price will come down,a new card comes out and the price goes down and so forth,i would still be on a 580 classified if it wasn't so damn noisy when playing games, ive got a windforce 670 and love it,ill be keeping this for a while longer until the 7 series nvidia cards come down in price.

Not that these numbers are particularly believable but the US doesn't add sales tax onto their numbers as you don't have to pay it in many circumstances(afaik if people order online from other states they end up not paying it?)

AFAIK they are still required to pay sales tax when buying from another state they just have to declare the purchases on their tax returns, the is actually a bill going through congress to try and make sales tax for online goods payable at point of sale because so many are evading it (and ofc international customers are avoiding it).

People need to stop accepting these prices and happily bending over and taking it. If I feel something is priced higher than it should be then I just don't buy it. And it's not that I can't afford to pay the price either as I could happily go out and buy sli titans. I just refuse to be ripped off. If more people adopted this stance then prices would drop to a more acceptable level.

I was originally planning to get a 780 on launch until I saw the eye watering price tag. Ended up buying a second hand 680 for £200 which has more than enough performance for me :)

I think iPhones are vastly overpriced and for that reason refuse to buy one but as long as there are plenty of people that are willing to pay it then prices will remain as they are.

Same thing with these graphics cards, market demand for these cards will keep the prices higher.

They also mention $649 which with vat is a more reasonable £485

It's not that simple, european prices are always more expensive even after taking VAT into account. For example the gtx 670 launched at $399 but it also launched in Europe at €399. The best way to determine how much it will likely cost in the UK is find the euro price (usually the same as the dollar, convert that to pounds and add 50 pounds onto it)

I still feel the 290X will be £500 - £550 with the reference at the lower and custom at the higher.

This...they're playing it very close to the chest as it's going to compete with 780 pricing and they don't want Nvidia to undercut them. If it wasn't for that they'd of announced it yonks ago...

Very quick to jump down the green teams throat on here but AMD are just as crafty, they're looking to get as much for these cards as they can :D (and why not).

All companies will charge as much as they can get away with for any of their products. This is just a fact of life, companies want to maximise their profit margins and pay shareholders. Don't like the price, then vote with your wallet. Don't blindly pay whatever they ask and then complain about prices.

I totally agree, for comparison the 7970 was $549 USD at launch and we saw prices around £450, this is an extra hundred bucks so probably see pricing from £550

Should also add some time ago I saw $599, obviously no one knows the final price yet, including AMD
