MSN messenger

Woke up today to have msn messenger tell me I HAVE TO update to log in...

Now being one of the only microsoft products I use out of choice besides the operating system I wish they would just leave it be. Now it seems they have a big new installer / updater etc that trys to get you to install everything else with it.

I have always just grabbed a latest-ish version of msn and straight away put a mess.be patch on it to make it back to something useful and clean without the silly amount of rubbish they put with it now.

They just seem to be over milking the fact its used by a lot of people therefore trying to force them to use all their over useless things, live id's, the microsoft search page etc etc.

Hope a patch hurries up and comes out for this or I may have to go back to something like trillian.

Have the same problem.

I barely use MSN though any more. Not sure if I can actually be bothered to upgrade.

I used to keep it for occasionally playing a bit of 7 card poker with people, but I don't bother any more.

I don't need the webcam features and whatnot so I'm really tempted to uninstall it and go for e.g. Trillian, Pidgin or Digsby..

Dont be so over dramatic.

It does not force you to instal other alternatives, it gives you the option and you can untick what you don't want.

Also, its FREE.

They are trying to get people to use the whole microsoft social networking thing it seems as I'm getting updates streaming through the bottom of the window which is seriously annoying.

Also you select what you want installed out of all the stuff offered, windows mail, picture gallery etc which of course i deselected them all yet its still installed windows mail. -.-

use facebook to IM with normal people.

use steam to IM with Internet people.

i've not used MSN in well over 4 years, been a very happy Trillian user for all this time.

Never need webcams or any of that fancy stuff so suites me fine

I've gone back to using MSN now with Windows 7 because it integrates nicely with the new taskbar but certainly before that I was using pidgin and still do on my laptop.

I like MSN messenger, and it's option for the others. No worse than Google pushing Chrome on their search engine all the time

Yeh I woke to this earlier, which was annoying.
New version isn't too bad though (patched with apatch) straight away.

Yes, I don't understand why Valve can't cobble together a slightly better IM client for Steam but I suppose they don't want it hogging too much resources when you're playing games. Still though, it would be nice to set my status to, for example, "Invite to L4D please" and still have it displayed while playing other games.
