MSN messenger

Is Windows Live Messenger not the same as msn then? I always thought it was.

Yeah, the name changed over the years.

MSN Messenger Service from 1999 - 2001
MSN Messenger from 2001 - 2005
Windows Live Messenger from 2005 - present

The last version of MSN is MSN Messenger 7.5 which can still be used today, if you switch its compatibility settings to win 2000

buy a mac if you want msn with no features other than chat. it really is rubbish. yet great for me since i only need the chat anyway...

When I was using XP 64-bit, msn forced me to update the software as it wouldn't let me login otherwise. So I update it and then get an error message saying it doesn't work with my o/s rendering msn useless. I leave it till the next day and tried again and they had removed the compulsory update lol

I've had this discussion in the software forum... I don't understand what people's problem is with new versions of msn, some people labelled it as "unusable" despite the fact that in essence it has barely changed since it was "windows messenger".

My MSN is almost exactly the same layout as "windows messenger" but looks a lot better than it used to. I'm not seeing a problem.

Got to agree what the hell are you guys getting worked up about?

Whats all this extra stuff you are talking about ?? The stuff that i ignore?? and just talk to the little green people on my list?

It's because it's cluttered with loads of utter useless *****, and is being forced on us by Microsoft. People don't seem to be able to understand the issue until they've used a stripped down client like mess.be

I've used the mess.be patch, I've used pidgin, I've used trillian extensively. Here's the image I used in the previous thread:

I'm not seeing much clutter other than the advert, and that's the original windows messenger vs one of the latest live messenger versions, the new one looks better to me.

Nice, it installed today (demanding that i upgrade) to find its the same as the old one except its deleted everything in explorer.....all cookies, all favorites, recent used bar etc, all gone.

I hate microsoft.

My main gripe is the picture transfer. I don't want the photosharing guff that takes up the whole window when you are sending the file, making you wonder where your conversation has gone. I don't want to share picture files, I just want to do a file transfer direct to my received files just as I used to. Now you can get round this by dragging and dropping the file onto the person in the contacts window rather than the conversation window but why can't I switch the annoying photosharing bit off? I think I'll go back to trillian again.
