Having been a gamer all my life, but a stalwart single player only, I've finally bitten the bullet recently and given online multiplayer a go. I've started with Titanfall, and then BF4 a few days ago.

You know what? I like it! I feel like I've discovered something new (daft I know, but it is to me) which is a rare feeling these days.

With Titanfall it seems fairly straightforward and easy to understand. I think it's also regarded as a pretty simple experience and a good intro for multiplayer, so was probably a good one for me to start on.

With BF4 - I'd read about all the bugs and issues, and couldn't even launch the game. I got messages about invalid licences and missing DLL files, and it took me several hours of faffing to even get it to launch. When it finally worked it started with a browser window that just totally confused me (Which I now know to be 'Battlelog') and I just thought here we go, what the **** have I done here :)

However, I persevered and somehow managed to get on a 64 player map (pacific storm I think), and after a few minutes something hit me. Excitement is too strong a word, but it was something approaching it. It felt manic, and pretty amazing to be part of the mass chaos that was going on.

However, I'm naturally pretty poor and just keep getting killed repeatedly as it's all new to me and I'm learning the ropes at the moment, but can anyone recommend any good links, or guides for beginners? I've had a look around and there isn't a lot of good info out there for complete newbs.

Also, I can see BF4 and Titanfall being even better if you get play in more organised maps with 'teams' somehow, but again what's the best way to go about this, especially as I have no online 'friends' boo hoo :(

Are there any sort of ocuk clans out there, or something beginner friendly that people can recommend for multiplayer virgins like me?

Basically, just keep playing and enjoy it.

Getting into clans does help in the long term, but I'd concentrate on getting to know the maps and building a friends base - if you join a squad with someone friendly and they're chatting away, just add them later on and keep an eye out when they're about and join their games :)

my advice is to try some other genres like rts, mmos and mobas. I cant stand online fps these days full of people with ADHD.

Yeah early online gaming does require you to be a stalker.

What happens when you play those mind numbing games like COD/BF4. Plenty of good online FPS games around.

I think you've probably nailed it there. I just have to dive in and learn as I go I guess.

Specifically with BF4 though - are there any servers out there specifically aimed more at beginners? It seems like there are 'normal' or 'hardcore' in the descriptions and that's it?

Some servers are labeled noobs only and I've certainly been auto kicked from a server for having too high a rank (limit was 50 IIRC).

They are the difficulty modes. Normal is standard BF4, with minimap and reticules etc. Hardcore has no minimap, no reticule, friendly fire (although I can't remember how many of these features can be turned on/off - probably all of them). Oh and hardcore is normally a one-hit kill fest, which is why some people think of hardcore as more 'n00bish' than normal mode.

Cheers bud, that's useful.

Regarding BF4 and friendly fire - do you mean on 'normal' maps you can't actually damage your fellow team mates if you shoot them accidentally? This is partly why I've been ultra cautious and a bit rubbish, i.e. not wanting to shoot the wrong side!

Half the time I can't tell who is on what side. I know that green or blue is your own side, but sometimes I see infantry running about with nothing (no colours or icons) floating above their heads, but sometimes they have red icons. Is the basic rule that if they have nothing floating above their heads - they are the enemy?

Yeh, on hardcore there is (or used to be - not sure as haven't played HC in ages) a bug where the little green triangle that appears above a friendly's head wouldn't appear for a few seconds, which resulted in a ton of accidental friendly fire! Partly the reason why I don't bother with HC anymore.

And yes, on normal mode friendly fire is turned off (but again, I think the owner of the server can change individual settings like this).

Oh and a tip, if you want to level up your Assault or Support classes, find a server that has the Operation Locker map on team deathmatch on a loop (i.e. it is the same map/gametype on repeat). Then just spam health packs (for Assault) or ammo packs (for Support) and you will get a ton of points as that map is a CQC spam fest :D I think I maxed out my grenade unlocks in just a couple of games of TDM on that map due to the choke points and how everyone bunches up :)

Glad it's not just me :)

I really like Titanfall, but there's something about BF4 that's getting me more excited. I think it's the potential to have some really massive, epic and involving battles, once I know what I'm doing of course.
The graphics, and performance on my rig are also pretty tasty.

if your like me and get frustrated easily then i would give it a miss. remember most of these guys life revolves around k/d ratios etc. i managed 3 kills in about 14 games and gave it a miss. my 13 year old son regularly tops the score sheets tho but he plays these kind f games 24/7

the part i like about titanfall is the grunts which means no matter how bad you are at least you can level up reasonably quick ( i took 3 days to genration 2 )

I only get frustrated if something goes wrong because it's my fault, if that makes sense. I also don't particularly care to be top of any sort of leaderboard, and I don't really give a tinker's cuss about any stats and kill rates - What I'm looking for is an overall experience that I can enjoy and feel a part of < god that sounds a bit wet. You know what I mean though.

Perhaps I should be looking more at stuff like Arma 3 online, which I suspect is a lot more measured and involved.

BF4 is awesome when you get good squadmates. Especially if one of them is an ace heli pilot, and the rest of the squad ride along in the heli, constantly repairing it making it almost invincible, and causing the enemy team to rage hard :D plus there are some hilarious moments to be had with C4 on jet skis and quad bikes.

But yes, there are also moments of extreme frustration with random crashes and poor hit reg, although for me personally, it hasn't crashed once in the last few weeks (it crashed about 4-5 times per night when I got it on release).
