Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Fast? :D How would one go about enabling manual mode?

I quickly set it back to GPS when I realised my mistake - it could have ended very badly if it had flown towards me! It went forwards and up at an angle of about 30* and was ridiculously quick.

You enable Manual mode in the DJI Assistant software. Can't remember if it's on the control one or the Phantom one... It's really not something you want to be playing with but it's nice to know it's there in case it starts doing odd things. I'd probably crash it but it's better than it being 2 miles away.

I tend to fly when the sun is low in the sky, or at least on my back. Flying in the evening makes it *much* easier to see where the front is.

Ive Just ordered some led lights for my quad to help with this also found out that with simple mode, ive got to add i think is the magnetic declination

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I can't read every post in this thread!

Any recommendations for a small (hand size) quadcopter with proper stabilisation (i.e. not a kids toy) for indoor use? I would need a complete kit: quadcopter, battery & charger, radio.

Thanks!

Trappy has been let off his $10,000 fine and that makes commercially flying a UAS commercially in the US legal :)

Hubsan X4 or Blade Nano QX, both are fantastic.

Very few quads come without stabilisation due to the fact that flying without stabilisation isn't at all easy, you have to have at least a moderate amount of skill to do it. You could argue that the ones WITH stabilisation are the kids toys ;)

Ha ha! Good point! I will check those models out. Any recommendations on where to buy?

Just taken it out and everytime i put it loiter mode, it shoots up. So me thinking that ive done something wrong ive started the wizard from scratch and then set my flight mode up and now its got an oscillation any pointers ?

It's a running joke in RC forums that Phantoms/Nazas randomly try to fly home to China.

Fly-aways seem to happen quite often, last week I saw 3 seperate posts in UK forums/Facebook asking if anyone had lost a Phantom as someone had found them.

The one on Facebook is a closed group I can't link to.

People often say it's user error and not waiting for sat lock but on the other hand there have been experienced folks argue that they did everything correct. I guess nobody really knows :)

It's definitely not user error (wasn't in my case). My hex. with Naza M/GPS was flying absolutely fine with full satellite lock and suddenly decided to pitch left and land itself in a tree, I had absolutely no control over it when it went but after we retrieved it and tested it, it flew perfectly again.

Now I only ever fly in manual or attitude hold mode just in case.

I tend to agree with you but I was being diplomatic ;) It definately does appear to happen for no reason.

Definately user error. If you take off with green lights, you won't get a flyaway.

Was soooo happy to see my phantom today after losing it flying low through a load of trees on the golf course, I was sure I would be spending the evening with a torch in the undergrowth :D

Goggles

currently using blackpearl diversity monitor. wanting to buy some goggles, was going to buy the skyzone goggles then sell the blackpearl monitor. would the skyzone be better than the fatshark attitude goggles. thanks in response..

I have built the same frame as the OP, but instead of wood for the center I used aluminium plate, as I had some knocking around at the time and it seemed more rigid. Does anybody know if having the aluminium there will effect the radio signals in any way? Just wondering if I should change it for wood.

I've mostly got my DRQ250 built

Tight fit on the dirty plate.

Pretty much just the frame.

Mostly finished now, as it is pictured it's 520g

I'm just waiting on a tiny FrSky V8R7-II Rx and FPV camera. I taped on the crappy orange DSM2 Rx to test that it flies (which it does). Once the Rx and cam are here I just need to make up a custom video loom and tidy up the rest of the wiring then it's time to have some fun! :D

The HK motors are also probably just temporary until somewhere has stock of SunnySky 2204 2300kv motors.

What FPV Monitor and AV transmitter would you guys recommend for my f450?

Black Pearl for the monitor. It's an IPS panel, has a built in diversity receiver, a removable battery and loads of inputs and outputs. It's brilliant.

For the vTx, pretty much anything really. Technically you are limited to 25mW in the UK but no one seems to bother with this. I'm using various different ones:

Immersion 250mW on the Phantom 2
Boscam 200mW on the Phantom 1 and F550
DJI AVL58 500mW on the S800 EVO

The important thing for range by the way is antennas. I see people sticking 1000mW vTx on their multis and then using the stupid little duck antennas. A low power vTx with a good cloverleaf antenna and a diversity receiver with a skew-planar and a spironet panel (or helical) antenna will have you covered for kms of range.

Its a great frame, been doing some fpv with it over the last few days.

Ive got some sunnysky 2300kv on order from www.multirotorsuperstore.com

looks like they have sold out again now though :(

The rcx motors are working well with this frame,so i might use the sunnysky in something else

Jesus Col that's small! Nice soldering skills btw ;)
Yeah, it is pretty small, I think the reasoning behind it is it's easier to fly through gaps and smaller stuff is generally tougher.
And thanks, I find soldering quite theraputic :D

It's annoying that multirotorsuperstore and whitespy seem to be the only places that sell them right now, or not as they're out of stock. I guess the popularaity of mini quads has shot up and SunnySky are taking a while to ramp up production.

I can't wait to get it outside :)
