Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

This so so challenging to learn, the first thing i found quite challenging is the fine throttle control or even maintaining even throttle while engaging rudder at the same time, when i first put the Q4 in the air i kept falling suddenly and could not figure out why but it turns out every time i engage rudder i drop the throttle.

Then i have to deal with flying towards myself... it just so unnatural. Hats off to you guys that have this diald in. i did think about picking up a rc flight sim but hat £130 for the recommended one i thought again!

Loads of fun though and the missus is pulling her hair out having to dodge the angry little bee flying around out living room :D

Ridiculous. They could have waited, he'd have to land sooner rather than later.

The twisted part of me would have liked to see the craft crash into some very expensive property a mile or so from where it was being flown causing lots of damage because someone "thought" they'd be able to control it after grabbing the transmitter.

If someone came and grabbed the transmitter out of my hand while I was flying one of my 700 size helicopters, it could very easily end up with me, and/or them in hospital, or dead. You don't want 200g of carbon fibre blades hitting you at about 300mph.

I only fly it at my club field, because I'm not a moron, so it's not likely to happen, but an RC helicopter (or a quad in rate/manual mode) is about as difficult to control as something can get.

Ive been flying these things for a year now and still struggle when im facing to the side or towards me. Its these times when I have the accidents :o

Here's a reasonable build for a kick off:

DJI F450 kit - £131 (includes frame, motors and ESCs) or F550 kit (£232) if you fancy a hex rather than a quad
Turnigy Nano-tech 5000mAh 4S lipo
FrSky Taranis transmitter - £180 (includes X8R receiver)
DJI Naza-M V2 - £191 (get this rather than the Lite as you can't add items such as the iOSD or Zenmuse with the Lite)
Decent, cheap LiPo charger

You can get the Naza-M V2 with the F450 and F550 as a package if you want to save some money.

Going to start look at buying this over the next few months, what are peoples preferences hex or quad? Is this enough to get me setup with a decent menovourability, potential for good range, speed, altitude etc, what about flight times ? Can you increase battery if you want to, and I'm assuming this would be able to fit go pro and possible upgrade to fpv in the future?

I'm going to start by buying

DJI F450 kit - i think

Obviosly if there is a cheaper way or kit available without being so bad it will fall apart that would be great, need something as a project to build up, and that's durable or can be replaced with minimal cost, but also want the build quality and something that will get some decent range, speed, manovours so I can do arial videography/photography

If you're having trouble flying there's a few things you can do... I used to have trouble, still do when I have a dumb moment but much less than before doing the below.

1. Do not go through the expense of a trainer, when you can use something like this as it will suffice.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Creativeworld.QuadcopterFX

I am sure you can get something similar for iPhone, but after a few hours of playing with this controlling my quad outside and flying everywhere was sooo much easier to get my head around.

2. And this will help no end, simple stuff that will enable you in a short time to get used to flying. The arrow thing is a bit extreme, but 'Walking The Dog' is valuable.

I used to use a spektrum dx6i with a model plane I had and used phoenix flight sim,

Could I include the spektrum kit in my build?

I will get that app

Yes, if you have a receiver for the DX6i. If not, you'll have to buy one, but you can get OrangeRX compatible ones for about a fiver, or genuine Spektrum ones from about £25 upwards.

I don't have the spekky anymore, I'd need to get the dx6i tx for around £60,-70

reciever wise what spektrum one would be best suited just a 6 channel to match the tx? That beats the frsky tx \rx rilot was mentioning, would this give me enough channel's for what I need it for?

I don't think DX6i with 6 channels is gonna cut it for a fully kitted out F450 though

Throttle
Aileron
Elevator
Rudder
GPS / Atti Mode Switch
IOC Mode Switch

So that's 6 which leaves you nothing left for expansion... Things like video switches / gimbal control / lights control etc etc

Might be better to spend a few quid extra and get a Taranis / X8R kit which will give you 16 channels (though 8 additional traditional channels after using SBUS for Naza controls) and best of all a real time signal strength reading (RSSI)

So really for this your looking at 7 or 8 channels + to give you some extra room? But 6 "is feasable"

for sure... at least if using a Naza as flight controller. The DX6i is a very old radio, and has no bells and whistles of a modern TX, but if you are on a extreme budget it will do the job. If it will do the job better than a Turnigy 9X or similar I'm not sure.

I know someone who flys a 1000+ size hex using a 9X :)

Excellent video and cheers for the replys. I like the flite test stuff and have been watching quite a few of the vids they have up. Very informative and seem like a great bunch of guys who are very passionate about what they do.

Im going to order a blade nano QX next week and some spare batterys so i can practice outside, easily swap out battery's and get longer practice sessions too. Its a bit pricier than the hubsan but it seems pretty indestructible and a good little investment.

Just treated my self to this little lot. Something different, little extra and tidy.

ESC CLIPS DJI F550 (NEW GENERATION E300) - http://kglprinting.com/kglprinting/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=25&language=en

X8R ANTENNA-HOLDER LONG (CUSTOMIZABLE)- http://kglprinting.com/kglprinting/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_7_8&products_id=9

GPS MOUNTING ADAPTER DJI F550 - http://kglprinting.com/kglprinting/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_3_4&products_id=7

Nav Lights.........

2x http://www.flytron.com/light-systems/185-strobon-xl-navigation-strobe-red.html

4x http://www.flytron.com/light-systems/186-strobon-xl-navigation-strobe-green.html

Then 6 of these http://www.shapeways.com/model/1694...-f550-a.html?li=search-results-1&materialId=6

All then to be wired into one cable (maybe make a hub for them to run into) so I can then turn them on and off.

Been having a lot of fun with my Syma X4 since xmas day, and pretty much convinced me that i will enjoy and be able to (with a lot of practice) fly something bigger.

The ultimate goal is FPV for pleasure (I would love to do some of the racing but live up north and don't know anyone else who does it).

I would prefer to build something slowly, fully understand what I am building and know what each piece does. Budget is an issue, I would like to spend as little as possible really, but will not skimp on quality, just don't want to waste money for no need.

Would people recommend starting with a 250 or a 450 sized frame? Whilst the ultimate goal for the craft will be FPV (I live on the banks of the Tyne and would love to fly along the river exploring the old bridges inland etc) to begin with I will build it with no FPV gear on it, then add that later once I am comfortable with flying it by line of sight.

Any tips or good sources of info would be great, thanks all.

Seems that the TBS Gemini and spares are quite late to come to market in the UK. Has anyone actually got hold of one yet?

So i had a few drinks last night and found my self unable to sleep, sat on the computer for quite a while looking back and forth for a rtf blade nano QX only finding BNF deals.

I got sick of looking and got a little silly with the bank card, I am now awaiting delivery of all my 250 parts. went a little crazy too on the build parts and spent quite a bit more than i had initially considered. To say I'm in for it when the other half gets in is a understatement :D

I had to get it all from 2 different shops, hobby king and HobbyRC. Hobby king are coming from the international warehouse so I have no idea how long that will take though I'm in no hurry to be honest.

One thing i did not order is a lipo charger, can any one suggest a decent one to charge the 1300 3S turnigy nano-tech, I ordered 4 which I hope should be plenty.
