Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I test hovered my Discovery over my bed this morning. I did think I had borked some of my ESCs when I flashed them as their motors didn't spin up at all, however they just needed throttle calibration.

Observations:
The APM out of the box is incredibly steady, it's very much locked in and will require the tiniest amount of trimming. The gains seemed pretty good, though hovering over a bed won't really test that.
The SunnySky motors are in another class compared to the Turnigy SK3 on my 450, they're so smooth and quiet.
SimonK flashed ESCs feel so snappy compared to the unflashed Plush ones on my 450.

All in all I'm impressed, I'm going to trim it up in the garden on 4S this evening as I've only tried 3S indoors.

I hope this sorts out my stability problems but first I need to knock up a jig so I can shorten all the arms to the exact same size and finish making a fancy camera mount out of a Pepsi can.

I'm also thinking of ordering and modifying a 450 Dead Cat body to fit my shortened arms to but not sure how the wider apart front arms will affect the X Configuration? Will the standard X-Mode work OK or not? Don't want to order one if the KK2.0 won't run it.

If you were running an early version of the firmware this will make a massive difference. :)

One thing the KK2.0 will do is make pretty much anything fly, there have been a number of people who fly the dead cat style quad with a KK2.0 you just need to search the internet a bit and will probably find some info.

Been playing around with a gimbal on me Tricopter, got it almost dialed in.

Damn, that's smooooooOOOooooOOOOOoooooove. :D:cool:

Thanks, its taken a week or two of constant tweaking and changing things to get rid of most of the vibrations and wobbles.

Gotta say of all the copters i have flown this Tricopter is my favourite,it seems to fly so much better in the wind than any of my quadcopters.

Doofer - good to hear it's easy. Might have to order myself one for updating the KK2 and speed controllers going forwards.

Just took mine out for a flight in front of some friends. Slight bit of peer pressure resulted in me trying to do a flip....
It worked! Epic fun, was really easy and even the one I did a bit slow was fine despite pluging towards the ground due to the amount of grunt this has. Need a little more stick scaling and tweak the expo on the controller as full stick movement isn't quite as fast as I'd like when inverting.

I found the sweet spot for P and I gain this morning, flies amazingly now. To know it can only get better with 1.6 firmware on the controller, simonk on the ESCs and more practise flying is amazing :D

Right, it's "all done" now in that it flies after I took it out to the garden to test. Boy does it fly!

It's so locked in and precise, it feels like the sticks are mechanically connected to the quad. I haven't even touched the PIDs, it's pretty much out of the box apart from doing the usual calibration and orientation stuff which was dead simple. First impressions of the APM 2.5+ is that it's incredible.

All that needs doing now is to attach the VTx which I'm getting tomorrow and the flight camera which I haven't actually ordered yet.

It's pretty much how I wanted it to turn out, black with a sleek low profile.

Nice looking frame Col!

Tweaked my stick scaling earlier, flips really quickly - this thing is an absolute demon. However I landed badly earlier after overcorrecting a flip, snapped an arm. :( Time to order some arm replacements - although probably just another frame the same as this one.

Stupidly when I went to examine it I managed to not put it into safe mode and knocked the throttle as I picked it up. Nice chunk out of my finger. More annoyed about not being able to fly the quad for a few days than the sore finger!

Everyone got bored of their quads? Or just everyone else suffering from rubbish weather this week?

I've gone through a load of props and balanced them, which is a pain in the rear but had to be done. It wasn't too bad without it being done, and even though they aren't perfect they are hugely better than before. Doing some tests with the quad on the floor (swapped props so it's pushing itself onto the ground) - insane amount of thrust :D

I've got the replacement frame bits on order along with some cabling for leds that plugs straight into the balance connector on the 3S battery I have. Also have the kit for flashing the KK2 due to arrive this week. Should be a busy weekend what with a quad to rebuild and working!

I've been waiting on bits and pieces, still waiting for some stuff to show up, weird how you just know the stuff isn't UK BASED!!! when the email to say it's just been dispatched comes through at 2am on a Sunday...

I did manage to fit an LED backlight into my 9x though which I'm mightily impressed with! Shame the cable and plug I need to flash it hasn't shown up yet though... :(

Smooooooth.. :D

but on the **** :p

Damn stars.. I mean it's not level :D

I can't fly after work as it's dark :(

I'm waiting on a LC filter, board camera, minimOSD and FTDI to USB breakout board. Everything bar the camera should be here before the weekdend I hope.

Are there any US Multirotor flyers on here - preferably Amarillo in Texas - Reason I am asking is a mate has spent 3 yrs developing his garden and a aerial picture would go down really well.

failing no US flyers can anyone point me to a suitable US forum where I can ask same question.

Dave

I finished assembling some fully retractable landing legs for my F550 last night. They are well cool.
I used a set of screw-servo retracts for an RC aeroplane and some carbon-fibre tubing.

Pics and vid later once I get 5 minutes to myself to fly the damn thing.

Look forward to seeing it Rilot :)

I wonder how good an RC water cannont would be, you'd have to carry the water afterall. Although I suppose even a few hundred ml would be enough to fairly well soak someone - good for hit and run. I think a smoke cannister would be a laugh plus fun when doing acro!

Think the first toggleable thing I'll make will be some extra lighting, like main beam headlights to toggle on when flying in the dark!
