Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

I got a "carbon" one for about 25 quid. It's fiberglass but strong as hell. I've bashed it about all over the place and it's still solid.

I wonder if there's a template for a qav250 or similar frame that I could take to work and make out of aluminium? I fancy a fast acrobatic quad, My tricopter is just too big and clumsy :D

This: http://hobbyrc.co.uk/frames is the page I got mine from, as you can see they also do plastic versions. :)

Cool cheers both

I like the look of ZMR 250 Carbon Fibre Mini Quad Frame, comes in a a reasonable price around £33

Will keep hunting, not decided on the scale still yet though

Aluminium that thin would bend.

Only if you crash it ;)

I had the RCExplorer tri frame laser cut from 1mm ally and once built its very solid, My dirty plate on my Fortis Titan tri frame is made from 1.5mm ally and it works great. If it does bend then it's easily bent back.

That looks great Kanifee. Howcome you went for smaller arms?

I'm considering one as a summer project.

I don't think im ready for a big quad yet and this was to learn acro on, my 250 is like £320+ and it felt wrong driving that frame into the ground every 5 minutes. The tri is around £150 with the woven carbon booms so im less concerned with the punishment it will take. Yaw authority is great and the 'swooshing' flight is so much fun on such a small unit.

It is a great size and very agile, flips and rolls are a breeze in horizon or acro and its rate of climb is insane. it has some tail wag when i punch it and go for fast descends but it is hard to take a laptop to the field and the bluetooth modules for the naze config app just don't work with the new firmware so PID tuning is a pain at the moment.

All in i would highly recommend this frame, the tail mechanism is very sturdy and free moving and the frame itself is strong. with the woven arms the wires will be internal and it just looks fantastic.

Go for it!

Im trying to get some footage of it but i fly alone so using my mobile and flying the thing is a challenge the the best of times!

Waiting on a payment to me, so I can buy some bits, getting a spreadsheet together of the bits I am looking at, bits for another 450 build, and a 250 build

So hard to decide

As I already have a 450 I am aiming towards a 250 at this stage

Cool. Thanks for this

I'm actually thinking of going the other way. I don't want to spend any more on my 250 basher but fancy something different and interesting and capable of carrying a GoPro. So I'm thinking a tri with massive props and wide arms for stable sweeping flight. I know a camera platform will be better with more motors, but I'm hoping larger props further out will offset the instability of a tri. The other option is both a small tri and a 450 quad, but I have neither the funds or the tollerant GF to achieve that :p.

Cool cheers for that :) are the Motors/ESCS in the links decent? I know the ESCS aslong as they are flashed with SimonK firmware they should be good

Motorwise I am looking for something with power, and good quality though for up to £10 each

I would prefer the flight controller all ready to go (no soldering required) can anybody reccomend one?

the DYS motors are about the best you can get for the money I think. It's either that or 2204 motors which tend to be a bit pricier. Other peoples opinions may differ though. They're not the most robust, but no small motors are really. I would have picked the emax esc's but they are out of stock. I have those, and the ZTW spider ones on different craft and they are both good. the ZTW are without a BEC though, so you will either need to use a 5v stepdown to power the Naze/Rx or a seperate BEC (not ideal as it adds quite a bit of weight)

Cool yeh had Emax ESCS in mind, will try and mix and match, may get a few bits from that website, and a few bits from another

Flight controller wise can one reccomend one that doesnt require soldeirng? i know know about NAZA.

You can get a Naze32 pre soldered from some places.

But for a cheap and cheerful one you can't go wrong with a KK2.1.5. I even fly my 250 on default settings a lot of the time. The screen is really helpful too, although difficult to access in a small 250.
