Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

So Im considering getting my very 1st quadcopter and Im looking for some advice on what to buy. Now I dont want something that in a few months time I will want to upgrade so it has to be pretty decent. Im also looking at something thats easily upgraded/repared by myself. Im pretty handy with a soldering iron and electronics so that shouldnt be a problem. Im also looking for something that either has a decent camera already attached or can have a camera retro fitted. I would also like the copter to have a decent range of flight. My budget is between £50/£100. Cheers

Look at the DJI F450, I bought and love mine, plenty of add on routes, but as others are saying, you want to up your budget if you want to go down this route.

Wow. FPV rocks! Although its all very disorienting and I find myself concentrating on a single axis too much and forgetting what I'm doing with the others. I need lots of practice... and maybe a bigger craft less affected by wind :).

kPATm, your not going to have much luck with that budget. I built my 250 on the cheap and it was around £200. It will just about carry a Go Pro if you add nothing else. So for a decent camera platform your looking at more like £300+ for the bottom end. Then at that price your hitting the bottom end of the ready to fly market (second hand Phantoms, Blade 350 QX, etc).

A few flights into my landing skids, similar to what DJMK4 is using. Note that you have to nail the landings otherwise it'll tip over. Not the hardest thing to do but just sharpens you up compared to belly landings.

My build so far. Testing the strobes....Flytron Strobon XL 2x RED 4x GREEN. Now correctly synced. Think the issue was servo tester. Trying via my spare DX6i and a AR6210 for testing only using gear select as means to operate.

Also i've nicked 2 ESC cables when removing cable ties, gutted

Which landing gear? The black one I ordered today or the white legs?

With the legs i nail the landings fine, however had one or two occasions where the ground has been uneven and it slightly topples and a prop goes in to the grass

What's the easiest way to test if a motor is bent or unhealthy? My quads juddering and stuttering about like it does when I damage a prop, but it's not the props as I've changed them :(. They are the DYS 1806s. I think my failed flips and rolls and a run in with a flower bed have nerfed something...

Edit: Erm... lol

It's still not perfect but its much better after tightening all those screws on all motors.

I've had terrible problems wit the DYS1806's I've abused over the last year. I'm on my 3rd set now. The shafts bend very easily as they are only 2mm. I had exactly the same symptoms as you, wobbling about all over the place as if the PIDS were too high.

Lowering the gyro lpf can help if you're on a naze.

Also, no flying today. Been building instead :) Started at 10:30Am and just finished now. Did go for an hours walk with the missus too.

330mm spider hex with 6x3 props, cobra 1960kv motors. Xaircraft MiniX FC w/gps and Xaircraft OSD. Will be run on 3300mah 25c Nanotecs to start, then I'll move up to 4s eventually. Everything runs on 4s voltage as well as 3s. I think. Not 100% sure about te camera, but gonna look into that now. Haven't weighed it in yet but suspect around 900g with battery.

Gandhi, that looks amazingly tidy. Your making the rest of us look bad :p

I'm running a KK. I've tried a number of different firmwares and most are worse. This might explain it though... most of the aftermarket firmwares increase the sensitivity of the sensors.

The black one with the mounting points. It's not bad, but you can't land it on an angle or whilst it's moving. No biggie, just take your time.

LOL when I first got the P2 I thought you were meant to do the motor cut sequence when you hit the deck. I got a lot of green-stained propellers. :D

Shouldnt be an issue, as i land coming vertically down anyway and as smooth as possible. How is the weight compared to the white legs?

I can chop and change anyway. I will have 2 sets of 4 spare white legs (need to repair one of the white legs with epoxy resin

My main thoughts with the black landing skid is good enough quality and not heavy.

I will do a review when its arrived, setup and i have tested it the field

Seems my implied pokey out tongue smiley wasn't as obvious as I thought :p

Tbh a rough landing is the least of the concerns my 250 basher has for its well being. Its currently sat on the radiator drying out so I can clean the mud off it :)

Has anyone here built a David Windestal/RC Explorer Tricopter?

Yes and it fly's amazingly, i used 200mm booms though. I have just ordered the woven carbon arms as i used pultruded ones form ebay as i didn't want to cut down the nice ones from him without testing first.

Battery tray and arms should arrive today or tomorrow and also have some 6x3 carbon props coming either today or tomorrow as well.
its using emax 1806 2280kv motors and with the 6x3 props should produce around 1.4kg of peak thrust and will weigh around 450g. it was fast with the 5x3 props so should be a rocket. It needs a bit of PID tuning with the reduced size but it is getting there!

I actually enjoy the characteristics of it more than the qav.

Are there any good drones that have pre built cameras in that are reasonable, it seems its either budget £50 jobs with 0.3 mega pixal or £300 parrot.

Anything for around say £150 - £200?

first time flyer too

Still not quite as tidy as I'd like. Notice there are no shots of it's rear-end? The MiniX is a bit of a fudge with the motor outputs in that is shares grounds. They provide some monstrosity of a breakout cable, so I just fudged my own. I'm not convinced the grounds need to be connected, they don't on the naze and there is no BEC on my ESC's!

Will be covered in mud no doubt at some point soon!

Maybe a bit of extra vibration damping will help under the FC? I had some success balancing my DYS motors by taking out just one of the screws that holds down the prop adapter.

Nice one Gandhi. Awaiting video of it and from it :)

Off out in about 25 mins, so watch this space! Doubt I'll get any video uploaded for a day or so but will see what I can sort!
