Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Yep :(. I was all set to charge up and go and then got blown away when I stepped outside :(.

Edit, what? 60g FPV quad? That's new, what you got?

DIY micro using an AlienWii FC, Hubsan motors and a 10mw DIY fpv system. I'll post pics later. I did end up flying 4 packs through it and has a blast doing some bushwhacking :D

SOSX "V2" Its a bit of a limited run unfortunately. I think the frame is available, FC deffo isn't :( cam os a 120 degree jobbie and the vtx is a tx5813. Such baddass performance for something so small, easily as fun as my 250 wind permitting and as I live in N London, allows me to actually fly in parks. Quite a lot of people 50m+ away cant even see/hear it :D

What you want is an SMA extender to a through panel/bulkhead connector. That way, if the antenna gets snagged, it should damage the connector before the VTX. I'll see if I can dig some links...

6" is probably way too long, there are shorter available. The end with the nut can go through a hole cut in the frame. This does mean that the fame (if CF) will be joined to ground (be careful of live cables/solder joins!)

Thanks a lot DB, funny thing is I did the same thing a few weeks ago, saw pictures of other peoples antennas attached to the frame, thought to myself, this is unlikely to happen again.... and it does... after preparing 6 batteries; grounded after a single flight...... bloody lesson learnt now..

Anybody have any kind of SOS beeping device fitted to their copters? From some of the crash-and-search stories on here I'm thinking it might be a decent investment for some of you :p

Would be useful but most of the time its not that bad.

I either use rssi signal strength to triangulate an area ,or just spin the props slightly, you find it in no time. Its worse if something falls off the quad. As long as you know where you are flying los and fpv and watch it well and don't fly it over majorly dense terrain you should be fine, they are not that hard to spot if you know roughly what area.

You won't lose it if your flying in a normal field

You can get beepers to go on the fc but its just more space taken

Even an early warning system so you duck as it comes back down to earth. :p

I'm led to believe this is a very very bad idea? I'm currently crediting it with burning out one of my Quad's motors! If the blade is obstructed and can't spin, you'll heat up the motor with no means of it cooling down :(

Bit of a trial and error thing really, go near to the crash site and i try it once, if you don't hear anything then just use rssi and your eyes, I'm talking 5 to 10% . Mine is easy to spot as its silver and red standoffs

You can tell which way most of the time the model is orientated through the goggles. If it's upside down then I won't bother as your right it could cause damage. Jus have to judge it at the time

I'm going to do a it more testing with rssi to locate, you can do this without flying.

The KK flight controller does this automatically once it looses signal/is inactive for a while. the Naze has an option to assign the beeper to one of the Tx buttons.

All this assumes you have power, batteries connected, etc though. Another option for larger craft is a small GPS/SMS tracker

Fair enough, sounds like you've thought it all out :)

I like the idea of those trackers (especially for applications such as hiding one in my car in case it's ever stolen), but dislike the need to keep the SIMs active.

I have a channel binded to the Naze32 for a lost model alarm so I just flick it on or off.

I also just bought a "loc8tor" because I often fly out in the forest over bushes and heather, it's more just a backup in case I loose power to my buzzer. I generally have an idea on where I crash so I don't really need a GPS, plus a GPS doesn't really help me when i'm in the middle of the New Forest with no signal, it's also lighter and smaller.
