Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Anyone got the Attitude V3's? I was settled on goggles until I saw this clip:

https://youtu.be/lAH2_ybPvhs?t=290

That screen looks TINY! So far away, how natural does it feel flying with goggles?I don't understand how people fly through gates and stuff with looking at something so small.

If you want a big picture and immersion and don't care about looking stupid at the flying field, get the Headplay goggles. I have a set and they are utterly fantastic. A massive picture (90 degrees FoV compared to 35 for the FatSharks) which is very sharp and immersive.
I've owned several sets of FatShark goggles and I hated them all. It was like watching a small TV at the end of a very long tunnel.

That's exactly what I want to avoid, looks exactly like that, staring at a TV that's at the other end of a dark tunnel. I can only imagine you'd simply have to strain to see anything!

EDIT: Also, the RC Groups forum is terrible, all my posts are simply ignored as they are 'basic' questions. Not a noob friendly forum from what I've seen so far.

You need to find the right bunch of people in there really....need to remember a lot of people have been asked the same question five thousand times :p but yes I agree, some are rather obnoxious

What are you asking?

Just general questions. Nothing special.

I blew up an ESC last night, I was rushing with excitement and wired up an ESC's power backwards... POP and a flame when I plugged the battery in. Ooops, ordered another one.

Odd, Cleanflight could only see the first 2 in order, not the 4th after the popped one. So unsure if the PDB is just unable to continue the crictuit without an ESC or if I've damaged the other ESC.

Oh well, I'll find out.

The Diatone v2.2 PDB is great, BUT, the holes do not line up at all, I'm having to file 4 holes down a bit to fit the screws. Less than ideal.

Potentially you've killed the PDB. It depends on how the ESC failed and whether it caused a hard-short when it blew. If it did then it's likely it's burned out the tracks on the PDB.

Urgh, I'll order a spare one now. Might as well.

It was channel 1 on the PDB, ch2 isn't being recognised by cleanflight or BlHeli, ch3 and 4 are fine. Also, no visible damage on the PDB it's self.

To be honest just try it all off the frame. Less likely to have shorts.

I've heard and been told time and time again to make a battery saver I think it's called...this stops potential esc popping

Edit: smoke stopper!

Cool, thanks. I'm going to test the terminals later with my multi meter, if it's duff, I'll order a new board.

Thanks

Hi peeps. I have come in for some information and was hoping you all would be kind enough to help me out.

I have a masters group project for my Engineering course whereby we have to design, 3d print and assemble what is essentially going to be a drone, with a helium balloon attached. We are allowed to buy in components, especially the electronics etc. This is where our problem lies, as we are all mechanical students who are convinced that electricity is voodoo.

Knowing absolutely nothing about drones except the bare minimum of fluid dynamics and electronics (P = IR right?), we could use some resources to pore over. If anyone has any good websites or books, or even blogs regarding drone control systems, motors, wiring etc that they could share I'd be most grateful.

Thanks!

A lot of resources online, youtube would be a good stop. Have a look on the flitetest channel, they have a lot of build guides, for example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWqnjDRubrs
It's their own model but the principles are the same for all custom builds.

For a wiring diagram have a look at (for example)
http://www.dronetrest.com/t/naze-32-revision-6-flight-controller-guide/1605

most components are off the shelf now and any good RC hobby shop will carry them.

I built a few from scratch with zero knowledge to start with. I would be happy to help, so would others here in the forum I'm sure.

I'm intrigued, why a helium balloon, they fly pretty well without assistance :)

If you are going high, be aware of the CAA regulations. https://www.caa.co.uk/Consumers/Model-aircraft-and-drones/The-Dronecode/

Thanks very much!

I think the helium balloon was to add another level of complexity and variety. You could essentially design one of those floating shark things, or go almost full scale drone like we are!

Quite an interesting project. We have to design the frame, balloon, and impellers from scratch, and have them all manufactured. I'll be spending a lot of time on Inventor!

Thanks again for the links!

Hmmm, seems I'm certainly going to enjoy the 50 degree FOV goggles more as it's a much larger picture... However, that's only in the dominator HD V2's lol...

Ah OK then you might just need a simple RC control circuit if all you need is to throttle motors up / down remotely. Battery, Electronic Speed Controller, RC receiver and motors is all you need for that.

Have a look at model electric ducted fans too, might better if you want to steer a balloon as they are all enclosed (or you could print the enclosure / mounts).

A drone circuit is more complicated as the flight controller + gyros are effectively handling each of the motor's speed to keep it stable & fly in the direction you need.

Been putting off taking the phantom up the hills for ages, out of fear it would be too much hassle. Strapped onto the back of my bag, I didn't even notice it in the end. Will be taking it up more often now. Who needs a Mavic!

Nice video, Clum! We were away on a mid-week break at the hotel near the Falls of Clyde and I had the Phantom in the car with me. Stuck it in my backpack this morning and went for a hike along the riverside trail with a view to flying it out over the falls for some shots - but I chickened out for fear of losing the thing as I still get a bit nervous flying over water. This guy wasn't so afraid, keep kicking myself that I could have got some shots like these!:-
