Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Hi guys, I fly RC planes for last 10 years or so now. I am interested in this FPV though.

Is it expensive. Light etc? Let me have some details of cost and what is needed, could be interested in getting this into one of my models.

Could be a lot of fun and another area of RC i have yet to explore.

Thank you

You can get kids on fpv hobby for about £70. And with low gain antennas ( preferably Cloverleaf and Skew-Planar) you can get about 1-3km depending on your location.
Aside from the kits they sell, you will need a small TV, a BEC on the plane to power the camera + transmitter and a BEC on the ground station to power the video receiver.
Where do you live? There is an annual FPV meeting next weekend around the oxfordshire area, you need to be quick to sign up. Head to the UK FPV thread on rc groups for more information.

Just got back from a UK fpv meeting oh my god it was pretty much a multi rotor fest.
Naza's, massive huge DJI stuff, a few multi wii gear. Videos will follow shortly, let's just say that buzzing things was fairly common :p.
I also nearly got hit by a spider as I stood up and walked away, then 1 minute later it crashed where I was sitting.

Lucky escape there!

Look forward to seeing your videos!

Time to place some orders, I've been following the Multi Heli's forum on RCGroups and there seems a real split on there with regards to newbies.

If someone has no RC experience they get told:

1) Get a simulator and something like a Blade MQX as you will crash it to death
2) Have a go at building a quad

What's the verdict from here guys?

If I go down the build route I'm going to be ordering:

1) Frame
2) 6 Motors (2 spares)
3) 6 ESC's (2 Spares)
4) Power distribution board to keep things tidy.

Does that sound like a good starting point if option 2 is the right plan?

Never tried a simulator but I heard they do help, haven't had any bad crashes but had a few tumbles and that was because I was flying 20 ft away with no way of keeping orientation.
I would for a quad-spider frame design, as if you go down the fpv route in the future then you have much more room in the center for electronics. I still think that wood is one of the best choices as it dampens vibrations and is easy to fix in any crashes.
Power distribution boards take up a bit of room, y harness is better in my opinion.
What flight controller are you going to use?

Can you link me to a frame that you'd recommend? At the end of the day I'm happy to swap out the frame at a later date once I've got the hang of simply flying the thing!

I quite like this frame

But you could design your own wooden frame spider frame. Aluminium is a decent material though anyway, easy to find replaceable parts.

Most of my bits seem to be ordered and on their way!

My parts for the quadcopter that I'm building have finally started to drift in.

I went for the DJI F450 frame as a starter as it seems pretty solid and includes a built in power distribution board:

I've then got 5 x iPeaka 30Amp ESC's which came from America

I'm getting 6 x CF2822 motors from Hobby King and am waiting for a KK V2 board also.

Once I've got this lot assembled I'll sort out the transmitter and receiver and the batteries and charger

Once I start the build I will take some photos to document it and post them into the thread.

Oh yes I have to show you my new IMU,

It's the GY_80 can be found on ebay for ~ £20. 10dof :D.
I haven't tried Baro hold and mag hold yet, but it will be interesting to see how it goes.
I hope to see some videos wonder, that new HK board seems quite interesting.
