Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Im gonna give it a go! Will be starting from the same point as wonder lander.

How much is this expected to set me back? In pure spend not time.

Good for you al4x.

Here's what I've spent so far:

Quad frame £21.50 - http://quadcopters.co.uk/dji-flame-wheel-f450-frame-kit-123-p.asp
I chose the DJI F450 as it's got an integrated power board to make wiring up simpler for a noob. Also they seemed fairly tough from the report and videos I'd seen online.

I also bought a couple of spare arms as I'm sure I'll still manage to break one and didn't want to wait for deliveries t receive them!

Motors 4 x £5.03 = £20.12 - Following the recommendations in this thread I ordered these - http://www.giantshark.co.uk/cf2822-1220kv-brushless-outrunner-motor-p-53.html
They didn't have them in stock when I ordered so I got them from Hobby King in HK and got 6 so I would again have a couple of spares.

ESC's 4 x $18.49 = $73.96 so about £48 - Following a recommendation on here I went for the iPeaka 30A ESC's from http://www.altitudehobbies.com/new-multicopter-gear/ipeaka-series-brushless-escs Again to be prudent I ordered 5 so I would have a spare.

Propellors - 1 x http://quadcopters.co.uk/8x45-pair-of-propellers-epp-orange-336-p.asp and 1 x http://quadcopters.co.uk/8x45-pair-of-propellers-epp-black-334-p.asp = £1.75 x 2 = £3.50
I got a further 2 packs of orange and 2 packs of black so I had spares. From reading on here and RCGroups in most crashes the props take the brunt so are likely to break!

Flight controller $29.99 approx £19.50 - I went for the KK2 board http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...2_0_Multi_rotor_LCD_Flight_Control_Board.html as it has an LCD for making configuration changes. This means you don't need to hook it up to a computer and can make adjustments when you are out in the field!

This is the stage I am at now and am ready to begin building. I bought various connectors and tools that had been recommended in this thread as I didn't have them.

Once this stage is built then I need:

3S lipo batteries
lipo battery charger
6channel transmitter and receiver.

Ah thats nothing really. Time will cost more lol.

Think ill start looking into it. Will be good to follow your posts as a build guide. Lots of good posts in this thread!

It is possible but only with level & altitude hold.
Well perhaps you could fly with just altitude hold but it will be really hard in acro mode.
Warthox once flew two quadcopters at the same time, while one was locked in with position, altitude & level hold.

What have I got myself into

Think its time to look into this, i got a week off at the end of the month for possible building but probably wont be anywhere near ready lol

I have just built an Arducopter. Test flew it this last weekend and all went well. Just waiting on a FrSky TX module for my Turnigy 9x and receiver and then will take it for a proper flight.

Never flown or built anything RC before so surprised it has gone this well :D
