Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Been rebuilding my Hquad today, cut a new set of plates out this time with the front arms
at an angle which will give me room enough for 10" props.

Looking to get around 20 mins fpv flight time on 2x 3s batteries

Can't really tell the size from the picture. Is it possible to sit on the middle bit whilst it takes you for a ride? What would be amazing! (not too sure of safety but still)

The Smart mode looks amazing!

Is that sort of technology available on other quads? I'm sure a guy at work was talking about GPS controlled flight like that, but I can't remeber the name of the kit he mentioned?

I wouldn't touch that quad. It's nowhere near as good as the Phantom or as well supported by the modding community.
Look at the DJI Phantom instead.

:p Haha. It's about 12-18" across, so no chance unless you want to chop your nadgers off :D One that size at full throttle could lift in the region of 2-3kg. Think if you scaled it up to be big enough to sit on that it would be about the most terrifying thing ever, stuck between blades that could chop you in half!

There is a company that's made a human size one but for that sort of application quads don't really offer much over a helicopter. I linked it in this thread a few pages ago.

I'd recommend this one also. Was gonna get one myself but hobby king had no stock for about 2-3 months, so I ended up buying a different brand of the same charger. GT Power something or another from giantshark.

New frame looks nice pazza. That arm and prop combination look nice and potent. Which props are they?

Thanks Mate, the props in that picture are graupner 8x5,i'll be changing them to 10x5 to run on 3s batteries or i'll run 9x5 on a 4s.

Looking to get 20 minutes flying time.

I'm not looking to get one, just interested in the technology. Does the Phantom do the Smart mode stuff too (i.e. stick relativity, save circle, GPS fixing, etc)?

10x5 on 3s is impressive, I know when I bought my motors (same as yours) I saw most people recommending nothing bigger than 8" props!
Even if I can I'd not really want to run with bigger props at the moment, I'd like to shrink the quad down if anything - shame 3 blade props don't seem to perform very well. I'll just have to get some higher Kv motors at some point :)

Ive been using those motors for the last 6 months on 3 different quads and allways 8x5 or 9x5 props on 4s,usually 20amp or 30amp esc, without any problems at all, well over 100+ flights.

They barely get warm.

Only been testing 10" on 3s battery recently and so far no issues at all.

The afro esc on the other hand have given me nothing but problems on 4s no matter what firmware, worked great on 3s though.

Ive now changed back to some old hobbyking 20 amp, flashed them with simonk and they are great on 4s.

So I could buy 10 and each would be programmed with only the controller it came with? ...How about it I bought 100

given that its a mass manufactured product I would assume that every once in a while you would get conflicts but the way I understand 2.4ghz technology that is increasingly rare...or I might have my facts wrong :D

Good to know. I've got the Hobbyking Blueseries 30A, and now I have all the required tools to update the firmware to Simonk - just need to read up on how to do it!

Yeh I'm loving these motors, despite the less than stellar bearings and slight rattle sometimes they go like stink and seem to be unbreakable even when smashing props first into the ground!

The blue series are great, ive got the 30 amp in a bigger quad,

The bearings aren't very good, most of mine now sound rough as hell,i have used them a lot though.

Ive had the odd dry solder joint on the bullet connectors and had to redo 2 of them so far, maybe over time they go like that, not sure.

Looking to get into this, is there a way of working out what frame, what motor, what speed controller, how to set up flight controllers etc? Really, where to start?

The Phantom is better as a camera platform but not as good at acro as the Blade from what I have read. The Blade is very moddable not that I will be doing much, I already have carbon props to replace the standard ones.

Been thinking the same myself recently, there are a few pages if you do a google search that explains a couple of things about how different things interact with one another.

Thinking I'll get a hubsan X4 and practice flying, then get the pieces together to build a quadcopter when I have the money.

Atm thinking of a hobbyking x666 frame, NTM 28-36 750Kv motors with 11x4.7 props and turnigy plush 25A ESCs. KK2.1 flight controller should help get things started though would love to end up with something like aeroquad with gps and everything.

And a turnigy 9X to control it.

Does anyone know how to properly switch the Hubsan X4 transmitter from Mode 2 to Mode 1? I am able to switch it between the two modes, however the actual joystick parts do not spring back.

So for example in Mode 2, when the left control is held down it will stay there, when you do the same to the right control it will spring back to the middle, this of course is correct. When I switch to Mode 1 I try putting the right control down but it still springs back to the middle, the problem when that happens is the X4 will then start up because that action of the control springing back to the centre will action the thrust.

I hope that makes sense!

Any ideas?
