Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Can anyone recommend a multi battery charger?

Been recommended not to get a single pack charger due to charge times, any thoughts?

Have been looking at the Turnigy 4x6S with Turnigy T-20Pro PSU.

Looking to get into this, is there a way of working out what frame, what motor, what speed controller, how to set up flight controllers etc? Really, where to start?

Xcoptercalc is a good starting point for weight and power calcs. Generally though, work out what you want to do with it (acro, fpv, aerial video or photography) then use that choice to inform your selection of flight controller. Some are better at somethings than others. Good guide on oddcopter.com. Then find a suitable frame, smaller for acro, bigger, more rotors for ap or av. Finally work out a rough weight for your finished copter. You then, as a rough guide, need to find a prop/motor/battery combo that will give you lift of at least double that weight at 100 percent throttle. E.g. if your quad weighs 2kg you need approx 4kg of lift total, 1kg per motor. Choose the props first, then the motors then the battery.

Lots of info on rcgroups forum!

It's 50W, it wouldn't cope with charging multiple batteries at once - unless you wanted to charge all of them extremely slowly!
Afraid I can't help more than that though. Didn't look into multi charging when I bought mine. I've never really had a problem waiting a while for recharges, if you plan in advance you can have them all charged ready for use anyway :)

Im not a big fan of multi charging - as over the years of RC ive got several different chargers that i run from a 12v car battery (no need for a PSU) which i charge every 1 to 2 months even the slow ones that slow charage your tx over night 50ma

Got my dad an X4 for xmas but I'll probably end up using it more than him though. Present for myself really I think. Once I've got the hang of it I'll probably look into making a bigger one myself for FPV purposes.

Anyone know if it's possible to attach a camera to the X4? I know you can get ones built in but they were more expensive.

Built my own, warthox frame, Openpilot Revo board.

Obviously would need to change my frame, i've landed myself in a bit of cash and wouldnt mind upgrading the quad with fpv.

You can carry a 808#16 keychain camera ok if you strip the casing off it... Footage will always be about shaky though as x4 so small

Ok will look into it thanks. I know quality won't be great it's just as a starting point. I doubt the X4 would be able to lift anything heavier anyway.

Spec check please! :)

I'm a newbie to the multicopter scene but always been interested in RC, work in aerospace and will start my aerospace degree next year so I figured its a good thing to get into! There seem to be some great copters in here so you guys may be able to help me out :D

Spent a while looking into it and think I understand the basics so I have put together a shopping basket from HK but if there are any UK sites which are cheaper then feel free direct me there.

I will be using a OpenPilot Revolution as my flight controller as I am not much into programming and it seems that it is and will continue to be well supported and its easily programmed using a laptop in the Ground Control System (GCS) which also allows for live telemetry and control.

So the copter itself. I want to build a tri-copter only because everyone seems to have a quad nowadays!

I have probably missed things off this so please chip in

One thing I am aware I haven't included on this list are props. This is because I have no idea what size and pitch to go for so I would appreciate your help with this.

I am a competent solderer and will be getting all the wire and connectors from my local Maplin as I think ill struggle to predict everything I will need.

All in this is going to cot me about £350 which I think is fairly reasonable

Half of yours links don't work.

Edit; what exactly are you planning on getting from maplin? I ask as turnings wire (on hobby king) is brilliant stuff, I doubt maplin has anything of that quality?
