Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Recreational with the ability to record my flights with stable footage for use in videos I guess. I've been flying the Hubsan x4 and other smaller indoor quads and think its about time to move on to something a little bigger with the option of getting outside and slapping a camera onto the machine.

But I'm stuck again, I was pretty set on just chucking the money at steadidrone.l I guess I'm also after something that looks a little more complete, I could put one together myself or buy a 450 RTF but they would both look unfinished and messy. I know how that sounds but I'm just a bit particular like that. :(

The folding struts are a big thing too. I travel a lot and would want to take it along on most of my trips.

*edit 2* Maybe all I'm wanting here is some assurance that while it is very expensive it also looks like a good quad that has some degree of quality about it.

After more research it seems that with the quad you get the ability to plot courses/have the quad follow you. It seems the standard autopilot you would get with the 450/550 won't allow you to do that. There is an upgrade but it would add £800 or so onto the price. This is the Wookong autopilot.

It seems to me I would end up saving more by getting the quad in the long run as this is a feature I would want in the future.

Got mine in the air for the first time yesterday, unfortunately it was dark by the time I had it ready to fly so I had to do it indoors. Given my level of noobness I decided to tether and fly it on something soft, so I tied it to my bed, kinky ;):p better than embedding itself into my ceiling, wall or body.

Even this was good fun :)

Well I've been flying it for two months now and I'm getting better :) This is my first onboard video.

It looks like I could do with balancing my props but that's not too hard.

Man I feel silly, read that as multirioter was just about go in and shout "down with that sorta thing" and "boooo to those guys"...

Son, I am disappoint...

I've got some Fat Sharks on the way and I picked up my board camera from customs yesterday :D FPV here I come.

What sort of a video camera do you folk use on something like the Walkera?
The Ladybird? For onboard video I think the 808 keychain cameras are pretty popular.

Here's my first recorded FPV flight. :) You can skip the first minute as I was adjusting my yaw trim.

Unfortunately it's pretty shaky as I was experimenting with camera mounting techniques but it gives you a good idea.

If you're using UHF and high gain video antennas planes can fly >100km, quads can use the same radio gear but running 4 motors constantly and not being able to glide means they're limited by battery life, a TBS discovery setup for efficiency can go about 18 mins on one battery.

Team BlackSheep are the daddies when it comes to long range flying quads, as you can see they went 5.78km on one battery in this video.

On a 2200mAh battery mine will do about 7-8 mins, I could put a 4000mAh battery and almost double my flight time but there is a point where adding more battery capacity increases the weight enough to reduce flight time due to the motors having to work too hard.

It's all down to getting the most efficient combination of battery size, voltage, prop size and motor speed.

Yeah I geat about that with a 2200mah battery on mine, although usually a bit less because I'm flying at pretty high throttle 70% of the time. I've just bought some larger motors so I can comfortably go up from 8" props to 10" and get my efficiency up for extra lift capacity and flight time. Larger slower turning props plus longer arms normally equals longer flight time.

TBS are pretty epic with their flights, unfortunately they're also immature irresponsible little tools hell bent on ruining the hobby for everyone else just so they can get a bit of notoriety. They've done no end of damage in the States and set a particularly poor example for people new to the FPV hobby. I couldn't get over the cheek of flying around the Houses of Parliament in London. Trappy is as poor an ambassador for the hobby as you could ask for.

I recently purchased a cheapo quadcoptor with camera in an attempt to take some aerial photos of some construction where I work. To cut a long story short the coptor wasn't wearing a hard hat and suffered terminal injuries. :D

I don't want to buy the same one again as it was a pain to re-trim every time I wanted to use it.

So what are peoples opinions on this - http://www.hobbybase.co.uk/udi-rc-u818a-u818a-drone-quadcopter-6-axis-with-camera.html
Will this be able to hover easily without having to mess about trimming?

I don't want to spend too much as the construction will finish in a few months and weather will also restrict outdoor flying.

Didn't spot this thread.... I've just got the RC bug again, though missus isn't impressed with how much money I seem to be burning.

When it's too windy to fly heli I've been bombing around field with a little Hubsan X4 and have a 720p keychain cam coming for it. I find the whole aerial photo / video / fpv thing very interesting so want to get into it.

I was going to hold out for a Phantom Video, but I think it might be more interesting to get a F450 frame and do a self build.

Looked at a ARTF one with Naza Lite GPS / Controller. I plan on using my Devo10 TX so will need a 6 Chan RX to go with it. My only concern is how hard it is to get the Devo10 / Naza talking to each other for GPS Mode / Fly Home etc etc...

I hope the F450 will be a much more flexible platform for carrying video gear than the pre built Phantom... and maybe more rewarding to work on as you can continually tweak it. The cost of both is not that far apart.

Still amazed by the thing. Have the v2 model.... outside in expert mode it's a beast even in strong wind. With a half dozen battery's you can get a hour of flying. So far only broke one prop in a really bad crash.

Just dropped a heap on dosh on a Phantom, GoPro White and Dampener... first flight done and it's just incredible. In Sat mode it just locks on and sits static.
