Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Ive been playing with my Syma X4 and having a good laugh, however last nightg upon leaving work at around 4 I heard a distinctive noise that is quite familiar to me now, and looked up. Above my works car park, maybe 75-100 ft up was a quad. Red constantly lit tail lights and blinking green front lights. It was motionless, absolutely locked solid in place it was weird. When it moved it was as if it was on rails and the nhovered perfectly again. I was mesmerised with it for about 5-10 minutes then it flew off over a housing estate, I presume returning home.

Do larger quads have some form of hover help? Theirs no way I can get my X4 to remain still at all its constantly going in 1 direction or another and not at all locked like that one was.

Thanks,

Rob

Yes they use GPS, compasses and other sensors to allow them to "sit". Thats one of the reasons I upgraded so soon after getting the X4 was the difference in capabilities of the bigger Quads.

The Blade 350QX2 that I just bought has 3 basic modes, which are aimed at different purposes, but have the stability capabilities built in. If you don't want the camera version the ready to fly version can be had for about £240.

Red and green lights sounds like a Phantom (being flown out of sight by a ****, as usual).

Larger FCBs can use GPS and other sensors to make them incredibly easy to fly. When using a quad for photography or filming it makes a nice stable platform. It also has some nice safety features (return to home, altitude hold, that feature that stops you flying into yourself ;)). But obviously they come at a price. One of the popular GPS equipped flight controllers is the DJI Naza. If your planning to launch many hundreds of quids worth of quad and camera into the air then they are worth it, but for the smaller 250 sized cheap basher quads they are overkill. There is a guy on here that got GPS working on a 250 frame.

My Hubsan Q4 arrived today and its crazy fun, very hard to control with such a steep learning curve but i love it! Took a while to calibrate it and it still drifts like mad.

Lost one prop already so im going to have to order a few more tonight and im not sure if it is worth ordering spare battery s as it looks like a bit of a chore swapping them out every 5 minutes, i just don't want to put it down when it runs flat :(

Get a prop guard (official one like it shows in the manual) It adds weight and reduced flight time but its much better as you pretty much cannot damage it!

Also, get official batteries if you do get more. I have a few and a second charger too

Yes for sure, don't use GoPro WIFI during model flight, both your control TX/RX and GoPro WIFI use 2.4GHz and with both so close together it's not a good idea. Never change GoPro settings during flight via phone or be tempted to use phone as cheap FPV..... for FPV you need another frequency like 5.8GHz and a dedicated way of viewing it like a ground station, TX mounted screen or Goggles.

rebuilt today - 4 new props and a new KK2.0 screen attached and it's airbourne again!

Downside is the new screen doesn't seem to get a backlight so it's a bit hard to read but hey ho.

Trying to put together a shopping list for a quadcopter with the thoughts of adding a gopro, fixed initially then possibly a gimbal. Absolutely new to all this but have made a guess at a list of parts. Can anyone go through these with me and tell me where I'm going right or wrong and what else do I need to look at. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm currently in the process of building my first ever quadcopter.

so far I've bought;

1x F450 Frame
1 x Naza M V2
1 x Naza GPS V2
1 x Naza PMU V2
4 x DJI E300 15A ESC
4 x DJI 9443 Propeller
4 x E300 2212/920KV Motor
from fast-lad.co.uk as a kit for £245.

IMAX B6 Genuine charger

I intend to mount a GoPro 4 and Gimbal to it eventually

I need batteries and the all the radio gear

For batteries i were thinking either;

or

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=26673

Can anyone recommend a decent radio set. Don't want to spend 100's maybe 100 max

Also recommend and LiPo alarm and lights for the frame etc and any Misc items I may need to build

I got solder and soldering iron but not much else

Cheers,

Chris

Turnigy 9x is a good radio, most seem to buy it without the module and get the FrSky module and receiver

You'll want to flash it though as the stock firmware sucks

Got the standard Turnigy 9x here. Still on base firmware, it's functional but not great to use. One day I might do something about it and buy a replacement module - but I'm yet to really have an issue with it!

Are you sure? I cannot seem to find a prop guard for the Q4
Where can I buy this guard from ?
