I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this already!

The lead single was released on Monday - I quite like it musically but I'm not drawn into the lyrics. There are a lot of them and as there isn't much of a dynamic shift between the verses and choruses, they aren't very catchy. We also had Psycho a few weeks ago, which possibly could have been cut a bit tighter but I still really like it (even if certain others are miffed at them re-using a fan-favourite live riff). Those that saw them at the recent live tour would have heard Reapers too... which was like Van Halen meets RATM.

Thoughts on the songs released so far?

Dead Inside was released a few days ago and is very good.
I can imagine Psycho being fantastic live but otherwise it's just a bit average.

I'm really excited for The Globalist.
Matt Bellamy said that it's a 10 minute prog rock song which is almost a sequel to Citizen Erased. All those words just fill me with joy

Can't wait!!!..... loving Psycho and Dead Inside...June seems a long way off

BTW my sister cuts/styles MB's mum's hair... so, that's my claim to fame :D :o

Just been listening to Psycho....I know what people mean about the live riff they used to do. Live, this song may have some teeth (edit: in fact it doesn't, just seen some youtube clips), but the studio version is pretty very flat. And the lyrics are cringeworthy, especially with the US marine overtones. "Your ass belongs to me now" Shudder. Good grief.

What has happened to this band.... :(

I think the best thing that has come out of them lately is the fact that they seem to be playing their old B-sides. It's almost as if they're aware that their longer term fans won't enjoy the new stuff so much so are catering for them in other ways. Pretty sure I'm quite mad about Psycho, what a cop out of a track. Even Dead Inside isn't really memorable, and I'm sure it'll be fully sterilised in the studio.

:edit: I meant Reapers, not Dead Inside. Shows how non-memorable they are to me I guess! I do tend to feel this way about new Muse stuff whenever it appears, only to eventually become fond of it. This will all probably be the same.

At least we have youtube for all the old live videos :p

Lost interest in them when they went all pop and Queen sounding, will be getting this for sure.

I was really let down by the Resistance album - the band just seemed to become... silly. I find this song (particularly the opening lyric) and this performance encapsulates that silliness. Yes... I know it's not from Resistance...

But when I saw them in Newport recently it was absolutely awesome and it has rekindled my interest in the band

After only a handful more listens, am pretty on board with this now. Stupidly superior to more recent offerings like the Resistance.

It seems like the days of their masterpieces such as New Born and Butterflies and Hurricanes are now a thing of the past. They used to be one of my favourite bands but I just find their latest stuff all a bit embarrassing.

The Resistance had some pretty poor stuff on it, but Exogenesis more than made up for it.
It was overblown and pretentious but that doesn't mean it isn't amazing.

I've seen comments like this a few times (usually in the music press) and I don't really get them. Both of those words have negative connotations that surely contradict with 'amazing'. I can't imagine saying anything I find amazing is pretentious... that's a comment for someone that doesn't like it!

My personal theory is that it that its used to creates empathy with those of opposing views, rather than expressing any true feelings of the author. Could well just be a throw away comment in your case, Deep :p

I thought Exogenesis was 'OK'. I seem to remember the second part being my favourite. I didn't find it pretentious but certainly overblown. Contrastingly, I thought Survival was awesome.

I love Survival as well :D

I totally understand what you mean, and I actually had second thoughts writing what I did. I still think it's a bit OTT but I absolutely love it.
I genuinely think it's one of their best songs ever, especially part 2. But that doesn't change the fact that it's really overblown.

It's times like these that Bill Hicks' musings on Basic Instinct spring to mind. An analysis this deep for something as tedious as Muse's latest album is almost as pretentious as Muse. :p
